Forthose who are unfamiliar with the band Lovecraaft band that hails from France,
Please check them out ! I would not have imagined they we're a Melodic Death / Progressive Metal band had I judged them by the cover of their self-titled 5 track demo cd.
Good thing I listened through the whole album as it is definitely a band to be on the look out for. It is evident while listening to the cd that a lot of their influences come from bands such as Dark Tranquility and Opeth.
The cd has a consistent tempo throughout its entirety and you are in no way tired of the musician ship.
The vocal style is that of a typical death metal band with its deep growls however they implement some clean female vocals in a couple of the songs.
I am not really a big fan of the female vocal sections but I do think it fits in quite nicely with the music. The guitar work is absolutely fantastic, the riffs are great and the songs are filled with amazing solos. The bass and drum work are pretty good but they are not really anything that jumps out at you.
I love that all the songs have awesome melodic arrangements.
My fave tracks on the cd are Grey's Elegy and Shape Shifter as they prove to be the most arsenal of the 5. Heavy hitting throughout and although melodic they give you the feel that you are about to go out and seriously bestow damage upon something.
If you are a fan of drums in death metal then have a listen to Maps of Creation as it has the best drum work out of all the songs.
This demo cd is a great start for any band to make their mark. If this is just the beginning for Lovecraaft then they are on the right path and I can see a serious future for them.
The only thing that worries me is their packaging. As much as it may pain me to admit this, and I know you really should not judge a book by a cover, (in this case a cd) I feel they may get overlooked and passed by on a cd shelf because of their cover artwork. When I first picked it up I assumed it was a hardcore or grindcore type of band. Good thing I am a Loud Director and have to give everything a listen!
Track Listing:
01. Grey's Elegy
02. Inorganic
03. Sagittarius
04. Shape Shifter
