- Special Summer Performance at London's Royal Albert Hall - - Second Contribution and Faces Now Available for Digital Download - March 2011 –Through no other intent than create his own music; Shawn Phillips has been a pioneer and visionary in a score of musical genres. And that may be why Phillips has been so broadly defined - Folk Rock, New Age, Acoustic Rock, Classical, Mystical, even Progressive Rock – it's hard to put a label on an innovator of such a musical amalgamation. But it's easy to see Phillips' influences in all those musical movements. His album titles have come to take new meaning of contribution and collaboration because as it turns out, that's just what Phillips has done throughout his career. And Phillips has done something else amazing during a musical journey that now spans over 5 decades; he and his music have stayed relevant. During his career on A&M Records, Phillips' made some of his most well know albums, Contribution, Second Contribution, Collaboration and Faces and in total, he has sold more than 9 million copies of his 20 career albums. The singles, "Lost Horizon", "We" and "Woman" were Billboard charted hits and received worldwide radio play. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Second Contribution which has sold over 3 million copies alone. Both Second Contribution and Faces are now available for digital download. Also available is The Best of Shawn Phillips. Phillips will once again contribute his talents to fellow rock pioneer Donovan's classic album Sunshine Superman during a special 45th anniversary performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on June 3, 2011. The two were roommates in the sixties in London, collaborating musically as well as developing each his own craft. It was during that time that Phillips with Donovan would introduce the sitar's first historic fusion with pop music through Sunshine Superman, and Phillips influence went further when he tutored George Harrison as he took up the instrument and later gave it significance in the music of The Beatles. Phillips was a session player (guitar) on other Donovan LPs as well including Fairytale and Mellow Yellow. Donovan (nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-2011) also recorded a successful cover of Phillips' "The Little Tin Soldier". In 2010, he took his successful "50th Anniversary Tour" to over 60 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. His previous tour included a first time reunion with Paul Buckmaster and J. Peter Robinson, key musicians in his early recordings and resulted in the DVD Living Collaboration: Reunion Concert. His most current releases include the brilliantly compiled CD, Shawn Phillips: At The BBC which wholly encompasses his keen level of musicianship and genius. When not touring, Phillips resides in Port Elizabeth, South Africa with his SA born wife and young son. * * * * Phillips will go down in history as a musician's musician. Yet looking back on the era from which he emerged, few artists have stayed in touch with the '60's bread ethos with such constant exploration or never-ending evolution. - Cleveland Scene This singer-songwriter made his first important recording almost 40 years ago: Contribution was an ambitious acoustic outing that showcased his willowy fingerpicking, multioctave vocal range, and penchant for high-flown lyrics. His persona as a mystical hippie troubadour has stayed pretty much intact. His guitar work is as masterful as ever, with contrapuntal picking and deft chording that sometimes make it sound like he’s playing rhythm behind his own leads, and his voice can still leap nimbly from a rumbling baritone through a full-bodied tenor to a soft-edged falsetto. - Chicago Reader Perhaps no one has made more contributions to rock and roll, with so little recognition, than Shawn Phillips. – Houston Press
As Shawn is about to reunite with Donovan on Sitar the question was raised by George Harrison's wife who believes George was the first. So, to set the record straight - here's what Shawn remembered -
I went to Georges house with Don twice for dinner. I believe the year was 1965, or early '66. The first time his wife was there, but it was Patty Boyd at that time. She had gone out the second visit. George had a sitar at home, but he didn't even know how to sit with it properly. First off, I taught him how to
tune it. I explained this was a modal instrument, and that was why he couldn't understand why it was dischording when he tried to play a chord. I taught him how to sit with it, with the base of the instrument in the ball of the foot, and explained that you didn't make chords with a sitar as it is a lead instrument, and only occasionally did one play on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strings, with the melody being played on the 1st string primarily. Sometimes, for some ragas, the 2nd, or 3rd string is used for the melody for a lower tonality in the Alap movement of the Raga. I explained that you tune the sympathetic strings to the melody you intend to play, so they resonate with the notes of that melody when you play them. That was the first lesson. Then we got stoned, and Don and George and I jammed awhile, but he played guitar as did Don, and I stayed on Sitar.
The second time was basically the same, but then we began to incorporate the the rhythmic movements associated with the Jalap, and Tintal movements of a raga. The 1st movement is the Alap, which is where the melody is introduced. The next movement, (Jalap, or Jhala), was a repetition of that melody, but with a tempo, and the 3rd, (Tintaal, or Tintal), was the melody with tempo, and free improvisation around the melody. I explained that in traditional classical Indian music, there were Morning, Afternoon, and Evening Ragas, but he and I
both agreed in our conversations that the instrument could be adapted to western music, without changing the traditional tunings. By the time of the 2nd visit, maybe a month later, he was already becoming proficient with the instrument.
Then we got stoned, and jammed again.
So I know I was the first person to give George sitar lessons, and he later went on to study under Ravi Shankar, who was the person who first showed me all those lessons in one 4 hour session after a concert he did in Toronto around 1963. The man was incredibly kind and patient. I went from there, and slowly began to seriously play that instrument. Many years later, I was a guest at a session he did with a musician in Paris, where they were playing Vivaldi's "4 Seasons", but the instrument the French musician played consisted of Glass Rods that he stroked with wet fingers. Am amazing session. I sat very humbled at Ravi's feet and held the score for him. If I remember correctly, the French musicians name was Baschet, or something like that, and the instrument was "Le Crystal".
The first song George played the Sitar on that was recorded by the Beatles was "Norwegian Wood", and it was after "Sunshine Superman" came out, so Don and I were the very first musicians to use the Sitar in a western pop setting. I believe that should set the record straight.
If you need anything else........... Shawn Phillips
