See a free show and help support young musicians

Tomorrow evening at 5:30, I will be hosting an open mic performance for my students at Pacific Conservatory - 151 Kalmus Dr. #G in Costa Mesa, CA. If you're in the area or have friends in the Orange County/Costa Mesa area, please let them know. This is a free show featuring some very talented young musicians that you really need to see. Come on out and help support these talented kids. Thank you.

I hope that you enjoy the music. Feel free to share the music with your friends. Thank you all for your support. I truly appreciate it.

NAMM week

On Friday got a chance to go to the NAMM show. Checked out some really great stuff including McDaniel guitars (great guitars and very cool people), Baudier guitars and Tone Bakery effects. Saturday, went to the World guitar show in Costa Mesa. Tons of really nice vintage guitars. I met some very cool people and played a '69 Gibson SG, mid 70's Fender Music Master and a 60's Epiphone Wilshire. If you're in Hollywood, CA on 1/31, come see me perform with The Box Stompers, my original southern rock band. We'll be at The Whisky and go on at 10:15pm. It would be great to see you.

St. Patty's Day weekend shows

Great shows this weekend. I had a blast and met some really great people. I truly appreciate the support. Saturday was one of the magical performances that you have where everything goes right. Sunday, well it started with me having to perform a little surgery on a guitar cab just prior to the show, but then everything fell into place. I'd like to thank my band mates for turning in great performances (a lot of them improv and on the fly). One of the greatest things about being a musician is being able to create something out of the ether and having it work and seeing the audience enjoy it...priceless...

Guitar sounds

I love tube amps. That being said, you can't always record with one in a limited space. Being a tech junkie, I have found that some of the plugins available do allow you to get interesting sounds. Some of the ones that I've used for guitar are Amplitube, Revalver, UAD's Nigel and THD'd Overloud. They each have their own character. Mixing the different plugins allow you to create some very cool guitar sounds. For mixing, I rely exclusively on UAD's plugins. For rhythm giutars I love the Neve 1073. They're extremely versatile and allow a lot of creative coloring. For leads, I'll use the Helios 69 ( I love this one), the Harrison 32 (another fave) or occasionally the SSL strip. It all depends on the song and where I want the lead to sit and what kind of character I want the guitar to have. there's a whole world of audio creativity available. What do you use?

New Mix

Posted a new mix of I Don't Wanna (Be Like You) changing some production and mix elements. Some times you leave a song bare just to see how the song itself works. Once you have what you feel is a good song, the object is to make it more interesting sonically. That's where the fun begins...

New Blog

How are you doing? I'm still working out the kinks in connecting all of this stuff, so bear with me. You can find some guitar lessons along with random thoughts here: http://axxepackes.wordpress.com/
