Recording and arranging originals, should always be a process in which the arranger must be totally respectful of the idea, the mood and basically the message that the composer or author (or sometimes both) is trying to deliver with his creation.
Therefore a true arranger should always take some time to sit down with the composer (and/or the author) and discuss the composition, find out how the melody came to be, what or who inspired the lyrics, what kind of audience is being targeted and with what type of message.
The next step then would be to discuss the preferred instrumentation and the one that better fulfills the purpose (in the end, the ideal is always a combination of both).
The final step then will be: LET'S GET TO WORK !
