(History) EP. 3, BRIEF HISTORY OF THEME PUNK: #1 THE RAMONES “Blitzkrieg Bop” 1976. Biker-gang
leather jackets and sick humor. Also poppy melodies meet speed.
#2 SEX PISTOLS “Pretty Vacant” 1977. S&M + F’ the rich themes.
#3 THE CLASH “London Calling” 1979. Global uniting of down-
trodden, but pop-sellout by 1982 like all U.K.glam-punk.
#4 MINOR THREAT “Betray”1981. Punk returns home to USA to
spawn STRAIGHT EDGE and THRASH METAL! Check the drum riffs!
#5 MISFITS “Vampira” 1982. Leather + thrash
+ sc-fi/horror + lo-fi guitars = HORROR PUNK.
#6 BLACK FLAG “Annihilate,” ”Wasted,” “Drinking
& Driving, ”Louie” 1985 Anti-booze punk gets grindy.
#7 BAD RELIGION “Big Bang”1989. Absorbs
Dead Kennedys thing to invent HAPPY PUNK.
#8 HELMET “Unsung” 1992. First big SKATE PUNK.
#9 GWAR “S.F.W.” 1995. Loses to NIN at Grammys,
last D.R.I. LP, Bad Religion’s peak, R.I.P. Hardcore?
A couple tracks like the live Helmet and Minor Threat I could only do so much to repair, sonically. But they're important enough historically to include, imho. The Ramones and Sex Pistols recordings are classics, but still only about a C sonically--I think I bumped them up a grade though. Most fun was beefing-up the vocs and guitar on the otherwise very well engineered "Who's got the 101/2? [live]" 1990 disc from Black Flag. Not that a healthy dose of your favorite recreational substance won't make the very rough guitar solos a bit easier to appreciate, but now everything's overall much easier to just relax and unwind to after a long day of bullshit.
