Now For Something (expected but) Completely Different!

Greetings from us to you and yours. We sincerely hope 2015 proves to be a truly great year for all. 2014 was a challenging year for Sugarfoot to say the least but as we all know, life goes on and we are excited to be moving into 2015! We began pre-production for our cd some time ago and we begin recording towards the end of January. Although we built a solid foundation performing Blues, Rn'B and Jazz standards, the whole premise of Sugarfoot was that there would be no pre-concieved boundaries or limitations to place on ourselves as to the genre or genres we explore. We both have eclectic and wide-ranging backgrounds in a number of styles and are quite comfortable with most. Because of our eclecticism, we of course are exploring a few new directions in our songwriting as well! Of course our sound will always be influenced by The Blues but it seems that there will be some traditional Roots and Country compositions included as well! Stay tuned for the official release date and updates along the way, folks!

A Clearing Of The Air

Well a lot of water has passed under the bridge since my last post. Sophie was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and as a result we of course found it necessary to take a hiatus from performing so that Sophie could seek treatment. She is responding very well and we are looking forward to performing again in the very near future! We have begun pre-production on a number of original compositions and plan to begin recording our first all-original release in January! So I feel a clarification is needed. It seems that whenever we perform there are a number of curious and well-intentioned fans inquiring as to the "status" of our relationship. Questions are always accompanied with a smile as people ask whether or not Sophie and I are an "item". We always courteously respond with a smile and a "No." Truth is, Sophie and I have been best of friends for about twenty years now. We share a deep love and passion for the music we create and perform. We have seen each other through some very low lows and oh-so-lofty highs. Good times and bad as you can imagine twenty years of friendship would experience. She is without a doubt the strongest person I know having kicked cancer's ass twice now. I constantly tell her I'm her biggest fan and she's "my favourite singer in the whole wide world". I also tell her that I consider myself the luckiest person in every venue we play because I always get the best seat in the house! But are we an "item"? We would never want to screw up twenty years worth of a good thing so we respectfully respond in the negative, thank you very much! Be watching for our spring release and we hope to see you in your town soon!

Why we are what we are.

Sophie Hunter and I have been performing together for a lot of years. We first met in 1994 and never looked back. For years now we've entertained countless fans at countless shows in our blues and Rn'B dance band Sophie And The Shufflehounds. Great times for sure and we continue to this very day. I truly hope we always will. The thing is, in that particular setting it is sometimes very difficult to really appreciate all the nuances that Sophie is able to bring to her performance because of the nature of the music and the environment. I've always known what she can bring and I always thought Sophie may have been a little under-appreciated. Thus the reason for Sugarfoot. I thought if we stripped everything down to the bare essentials (solo acoustic guitar) and left as much room as needed for Sophie to really shine, her full virtuosity would come to the fore. I took the idea to Sophie and Sugarfoot was born! Since then we've been so well received! We're getting a lot of invitations to perform with the most significant one to date being August 8 / 2014 at Sherwood Park's concert venue, Festival Place. We're on a triple bill with the entire event being shot to DVD with four broadcast-quality television cameras and a cd is in the works as well! We want to say a hale and hearty THANK YOU to everyone that has supported us thus far and hope you'll continue turning out for our shows. We love to perform live and we hope to see you all soon!

Onward and Upward!

Well we've had a number of shows under our belts since our first show in May of 2013. A lot of the right pieces are falling into place, indicating 2014 is going to be a very special year for Sugarfoot! Sophie and I have been working on and performing some original material with an eye on recording in preparation for a mid-2014 release! We also have been confirmed for an August 8th concert with our good friends Rita McDade and The Fusion Blues Band at Festival Place Sherwood Park, Alberta. This show will be recorded to DVD for release shortly after! Exciting times ahead for sure, folks! Thank you for letting us know we're on the right track! More deets as they come to the surface. In the mean time, please catch us again when we're in your area 'cuz we'd love to play for ya!

Everything Comes Full Circle Eventually!

I, like most Blues musicians started out my musical career as a rocker until I decided to stop resisting that natural pull to Blues and Roots music. The blues had begun resonating in me even when I was a young kid about six years old. To this day I remember being riveted to the t.v. and watching Taj Mahal on Ed Sullivan's show playing solo with only a thumb piano. Since then there was always a never-ending series of moments throughout my history telling me that what I'm doing now was always where I belonged. When I originally started playing Blues music for real, it was acoustically. Lightnin' Hopkins, Terry And McGhee and John Hammond was where I was going. I wanted to be a solo acoustic performer. Long story short, I've been making a living for many years fronting or running a number of bar-bands and doing my level best to tear the roof off as many bars and roadhouses as humanly possible. There was always a lot of Jazz going on as well. To this day I remember walking into my favourite music store at fourteen years old and being surprized to see a Jazz guitarist whom I had never heard of putting on a clinic to a packed room. This man as I would find out was none other than Canadian Jazz great Ed Bickert. I've been a huge fan ever since. As far as Sophie's earliest experiences in her career, it turns out she started out being a solo performer for many years often being backed by a solitairy intrumentalist. After a time, she wound up getting noticed for the huge talent she is and going on the road for years while fronting many bands. As it turns out, things have taken a very interesting and rewarding turn for the both of us. After nearly two decades passing since Sophie and I first started performing together it seems we've come full-circle and are really digging our new acoustic project, Sugarfoot. We're laying down our favourite Jazz, Blues, Rn'B and Country compositions and have an eye trained on recording some original music in the very near future! I love it when a plan comes together. Even if it does take a lifetime. I love my life. Cheers!

WE'RE CATCHING FIRE!

We're so jazzed that we finally got our acoustic show off the ground! We've been so well-received by everyone and we're really having a ton o' fun playing whatever-the-hell we want to without any pre-conceived idea as to "What pigoen-hole do we fit in ?" or "What demographic are we aiming for?". Total musical freedom! Because we both have such a wide and varied repertoire to combine, the possibilities are endless! Blues? Yes! Jazz? Yes! Country? Yes! Reggae? Hell, yes! This is gonna be a real sweet ride!
