Say What? Contemporary Jazz at its hippest!

Philippine Jazz Icon, Boy Katindig, brings back the funk, groove and International class in Jazz. by Ging Candelaria

Multi-awarded Jazz Pianist and International Recording Artist, Boy Katindig, comes from a well-known clan of musicians who pioneered Latin Jazz in Manila. Regarded as the Philippines’ most famous jazz export, Boy Katindig has produced and recorded seven internationally acclaimed albums. His latest CD, “Groovin’ High”, released under his own label, KoolKat Productions in 2005, is regarded as one of the best independently released genre discs of that year.

Popular jazz artists like Gerald Albright, Abe Laboriel, Brandon Fields, Russ Freeman, Phil Upchurch, Brenda Eager, Robert Greenidge and Michael Paulo has appeared in his records playing his original music. His composition, “Puerto Princessa” had been included in compilations together with the works of Spyro Gyra, Bill Evans, Dori Caymmi and other jazz luminaries. He has headlined the Allegro at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and recently, he toured with artist, Paul Taylor and has opened or shared center stage with George Duke, Fourplay, The Rippingtons, Spyro Gyra, Paul jackson Jr, Jazz Attack, Euge Groove, Kilauea, Jeff Lorber, Rick Braun and Branford Marsalis.

For the first time in Manila, Boy Katindig is joined onstage with an all-male vocal-oriented R&B band, MO-TEEF. Mo-Teef, though fairly new in the local band scene proved to be naturally talented and excellent, promising musicians as they play alongside the Philippine Jazz icon. Also featured in the show, and reuniting with Mr. Katindig, is his former band mate, award-winning vocalist, MARITONI FALCONI who flourished in the jazz era in Manila in the 80s. Her vocal style and presence ensues the nostalgia in the audience who have witnessed the prevalence of jazz fusion in Manila.

“Say What?” Contemporary Jazz at its hippest! is a highly musical, highly energetic and highly entertaining concert showcasing nostalgic jazz tunes from the 70's and 80's, and interpreting them in a modern style that fuses perfectly with the current smooth jazz favorites.

The selections in the show which are hand-picked by musical director, Mr. Katindig, himself, has a balance of retro jazz and new soulful and funky tunes. The show covers a variety of soul and jazz recording artists like, Brian Culbertson, Earth Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Lou Pardini, Bobby Caldwell, Seawind, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Lorber, The Rippingtons, Patti Austin, Ramsey Lewis, and Freddy Fox. Of course, the show will not be complete without the rendition of the very popular Boy Katindig originals like, “I’ll Always Stay In Love This Way,” “Capture The Changes,” and “Away From You.”

“Say What?” Contemporary Jazz at its hippest! Boy Katindig with Maritoni Falconi feat. Mo-Teef will be held in Vue Bar at The Bellevue Manila on September 18, 2010, Saturday at 9:00 PM. For inquiries, ticket purchases and seat reservations, call The Bellevue Manila at 771-8181. “Say What?” is presented by KoolKat Productions Manila and Vue Bar together with Yamaha Phils. and media partner, 105.1 Crossover.

Catalina Island is a place where the gentle rhythm of the waves makes time slow down. It’s a place where you can paddle through crystal clear waters in the crisp morning air, followed by Mai Tais and sun soakedmassages on the beach in the afternoon. Moonlit walks are the norm and a sense of timelessness surrounds you. That Catalina feeling of tranquility is better known as Island Time. Island Time allows you the time to do all the things you love to do, at your own pace. When you're on Island Time, you're always having the time of your life. "

CEBU, Philippines - International jazz pianist and recording artist Romeo “Boy” Katindig will be coming home impassioned with the purpose to revive jazz music in the Philippines, which faded out 25 years ago.

“I am coming back to my home country with the intention of reviving jazz music that was gone 25 years ago. I aim to bring back the fusion days to modern jazz,” Katindig said in a press conference during a recent visit here in Cebu following a jam-packed mall tour at The Northwing of SM City Cebu.

Famously known as Boy Katindig, he comes from a well-known clan of musicians who pioneered Latin jazz in Manila. His father is the Filipino jazz legend, Romy Katindig.

Boy finally overcame the obstacles which often befall the progeny of many recording artists and established a key element in ensuring professional survival: his identity. With his father moving to the U.S. and with personal dreams of performing his music to a wider jazz audience, Boy finally made Los Angeles California his home.

“There’s a new avenue for records. My dad moved to San Francisco and he said to me, ‘Why do you try your songs out there?’. So, I tried and followed what my father told me,” he said.

In 1986, after performances in Southeast Asia, the last of which was with Shakuhachi flutist John Kaizan Neptune at the Pyramid Theater in Kuala Lumpur, he realized the need for growth and international acceptance that he finally decided to move to the United States, the homeland of his craft.

Boy’s performances led him to Hawaii where he met saxophonist Michael Paulo, famous for his stints with Al Jarreau, Kalapana, James Ingram, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Patti Austin and mutual friend, David Benoit. Michael, who was looking for artists for his record company, Noteworthy Records, took notice of Boy’s indie release “Journey To Love” and produced his self-titled CD release in 1995.

After its release, performances around Los Angeles followed with Boy joining the Michael Paulo Band featuring Seawind’s Pauline Wilson. Most significant of these performances was at the Japan American Theater and at 94.7 The Wave Ala Carte, which featured artists like Branford Marsalis, Jeff Lorber, Tom Scott, Peter White and Rick Braun.

He will be releasing a new CD under MCA at the end of the year.

As he plans his retirement here in the Philippines, he would love to help people elevate their level of playing jazz and of music in general.

On that note, expect him to reach out if not collaborate with local artists in the near future. He will also be returning to Cebu to showcase more of his music. “This will not be my last performance here in Cebu. I’ll be here for a complete fusion of jazz,” he ended.

An interview with Rabee Evans, A-List/Jazz Buzz Columnist/Philippine Times

Last week’s debut issue introduced to you a fresh concept called “JAZZ IMPROV LAS VEGAS” by no other than Philippines’ contemporary jazz icon, Boy Katindig – definitely one of Philippine Music’s A-LIST artists! Below is A-LIST‘s interview with Boy Katindig:

A-L: How did you come up with this idea called “Jazz Improv Las Vegas”?

BK: You see, Las Vegas is not a city with a defined jazz culture, unlike New York, Boston, Chicago, or Los Angeles. But there are a good number of people living in Las Vegas who are true contemporary jazz enthusiasts. So I came up with the idea that would attract this type of people. Jazz Improv Las Vegas will be a place to hang-out and enjoy cool modern jazz.

A-L: How is Jazz Improv Las Vegas different from the usual live music shows by bands in the City?

BK: Jazz Improv Las Vegas is going to be THE PLACE TO GO if you’re looking for the right music fix for jazz. My concept for this gig is for all musicians, particularly artists, to have a place to express their original works, to be enhanced, recognized and appreciated.

A-L: Can you give us a hint of how the first night of Jazz Improv Las Vegas is going to be?

BK: Basically, it is not going to be consumer-friendly. Definitely NOT your usual Vegas live band gig. The music will be fresh & spontaneous by artists who have the passion for the art form of jazz.

A-L: Do you have a venue in mind for Jazz Improv here in Vegas?

BK: Actually yes, I have just the perfect venue! I’m lucky to have a good friend who shares the same passion for jazz with me, that’s no other than restaurant entrepreneur, Ramon Lim. A colleague in BBC Las Vegas.

A-L: What upcoming shows do you have lined up for the next three months?

BK: I will be in Manila and Kuala Lumpur in May & June for a series of concert tours, appearances in Strumms & major SM Malls in Metro Manila, tied up with 106.7 The Dream. I will have a benefit concert for my alumni, La Salle Greenhills. Here in the U.S., I'm gearing up for a summer tour with artists, Paul Taylor, Marion Meadows and Michael Lington in one package. Please check my schedule at “JAZZ BUZZ LAS VEGAS” too which will be featured weekly here on the A-LIST and at

www.allaboutjazz.com/boykatindig.

A-L: Any words of advice for artists trying to make it here in Las Vegas?

Las Vegas is a place of work for musicians who may not find work anywhere else. However, as an artist, you have to stay true to your craft, regardless where you are. Write your own music and take it to the next level. Hopefully, Jazz Improv Las Vegas will serve as a platform for this, a stepping stone for the true and talented.

A-L: Do you have a date set for the opening of Jazz Improv Las Vegas?

BK: We are thinking of opening the week after the 4th of July 2009. Will keep everyone posted.

Boy Katindig "Fusion Frenzy at Lake Las Vegas"

The Montelago Village was abuzz last Saturday evening (April 11, 2009), it was the second weekend of the Montelago Village Jazz Concert Series and it featured Las Vegan and Asian Jazz Legend Boy Katindig. As the unseasonably cold weather cozied up against the backdrop of the waters of Lake Las Vegas, Jazz lovers who draped themselves in blankets as well as in each others arms took in a fusion frenzy from the master himself, Boy Katindig.

It was fusion jazz at its finest as Boy complemented the cozy atmosphere with his vast repertoire of originals as well as a sprinkling of Chick Corea, Jeff Lorber, and Bob James classics just to name a few. By the end of the third and final set, the throng that had gathered was left wanting more as once again Boy left his uncanny sweet after taste.

Not to worry…there’s more of Boy to come! Here’s a sampling of what’s buzzing in the days to come…..

Boy will be part of the Nation-wide “Men of the Night Tour” featuring Paul Taylor, Marion Meadows and Michael Lington coming to your city this summer.

Also, "The Boy Katindig Southeast Asia" invasion kicks off in Manila, Philippines the first week of June then on to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia’s No Black Tie Jazz Club as Boy revisits friends old and new who have long been waiting for him in the flesh.

Till the next buzz…keep jazz alive…Butch Gutierrez "Jazz Buzz Las Vegas"

What's Buzzin' in the Vegas Jazz Scene?

Music is a universal language. It transcends origin, gender and culture. One person who has continuously personifies this concept is Boy Katindig. Coming from a bloodline of fine musicians, one would think that it was a foregone conclusion that Boy would make it in the music world. But making it was not what Boy had in mind, “being it” would be the ultimate measure. So he embarked on an artistic journey armed with the vision that each step serves to prepare him for the big leap. After making his name in Manila, it was time to for Asia. Then after Asia, the US seemed to be the logical place to measure himself and find his place. Which leads us to the here and now, Las Vegas 2008, it has become the culmination of all those magical performances. Boy Katindig has not only become synonymous to the Las Vegas Jazz scene in his own right but is also Paul Taylor’s wing man in his shows. Nowadays you will find Boy Katindig shuttling between his own personal shows as well as those of Paul Taylor’s, this makes for a very busy schedule. Talent alone cannot get you to this plateau, the artistic genius is the element that elevates Boy Katindig to the level of his much revered peers. The shows he has been currently doing on both coasts of the US and Canada attest to his continued popularity and following. His current release Groovin’ High, available on line at Apple’s Itunes, CD Baby & Amazon.com has been a keeper and is also getting a lot of attention from the national contemporary jazz community. The experience that is Boy Katindig is a must for both Jazz enthusiasts as well as those who just enjoy the art. Boy Katindig will never disappoint “true“ contemporary jazz believers, in fact he will leave you wanting…… Butch Gutierrez (Jazz Buzz Las Vegas)
