Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution / Blog

Thank you, Visalia, CA - Sat Nov 17, 2012

Posted in the Visalia Times Delta online: Nov 14, 2012 Tejano music It’s been more than a decade and two Grammy Awards since Ruben Ramos has performed in Visalia.

On Saturday, the Tejano music performer known as El Gato Negro returns to perform a Thanksgiving-themed concert and dance at the Mill Creek Conference Center.

“He caters to young and old, but we’re getting a more mature crowd because they’re the ones who follow him,” said Ylda Palomino, an organizer for the concert and owner of Palomino’s Music and NFL Shop in Visalia. “I’ve had calls from San Luis Obispo and Bakersfield. You can’t get a classier act than this man. You know he’s going to put on an awesome performance.”

Ramos is a member of the Tejano Music Awards Hall of Fame and won the Grammy for the Best Mexican American Performance in 1999 and the Best Tejano Album of the Year in 2009.

The concert will feature Ramos and The Mexican Revolution Band, the Martin Hernandez Band from Visalia and DJ Sounds Unlimited.

“[Ramos] also plays with mariachi groups and blues. The man is awesome. He does everything from boleros to rancheras to cumbias. It’s not just strictly Tejano music,” Palomino said.

When Palomino found out she had been successful in bringing Ramos to Visalia, she said her mouth just dropped and couldn’t believe it.

“They’re excited about coming,” she said. “On Facebook they said, ‘California are you ready for us?’ They are getting pumped up.”

After Visalia, Ramos will head to Pico Rivera for another performance.

A free meet and greet will be held from 4-5 p.m. on Saturday at Palominos, where tickets can also be purchased.

“It’s for everybody. I want to share him with everybody,” Palomino said. “The man is inspirational and I know that even if it’s one kid that we save, it will be worth it. Kids need a role model like him.”
