DANIEL SCHAMROTH - ‘COMMON KNOWLEDGE EP’ REVIEW

Jack Reid reviews the debut EP from Exeter singer-songwriter Daniel Schamroth, Common Knowledge. Daniel Schamroth, homegrown talent from the great city of Exeter, is a folk-influenced singer-songwriter with a damn fine ear for melody and a vocal influence not too far flung from the Gallagher brothers. Common Knowledge is the first release we’ve heard from the Exonian, barring a string of extremely promising demos.

The arrangement on this EP boasts a full band that is distinctly well mixed with Daniel’s distinctive vocals. The effect is an entirely pleasant one, as layers of shakers, guitars, and the softest of drums all combine to form an impression of a winter morning. The first track from the release, Flicker, epitomises that well; Daniel’s vocal melody is bright and rousing, with a guitar tune catchy enough to just fall short of irritating. It’s a strong opener. Heart’s Desire is a slightly grittier, country tune. There’s a really fun use of slide guitar and a far more prominent bass riff in this track. The march of the verses in this song are perhaps the highlight, with an interesting bluesy lyrical conceit being delivered in a few bars of distinctly country vocal melody.

Cold Wind Blowing has been recieving some buzz already, as a music video circulated rapidly on YouTube last year. It fits perfectly well into this release, despite having perhaps the most Gallagher-y delivery on the release. The chorus is particularly endearing because of its string accompaniment and wonder harmonies. There’s something deeply soothing in the build across that chorus, and something very cathartic as it drops back down into the picking of the verse. This track, maybe the best on the album, only suffers from some of the lyricism that comes off a little kitsch-y at times.

Always a sucker for strings, I loved the violin line weaving in and out of Angel By My Side. Something really refreshing in this song is the really distinct vocals (that perhaps come from doubling); they sound a little like something from The Shins. Of the outro tracks, A Broken Violin is strongest. It has an infectious scale to it, and I can imagine it booming out of a festival headline stage in the pouring rain at around 10pm. That sounds specific, but there the structure of rising cresendos that die out to return to the start of the blues-y build is very powerful, and demands attention. A Broken Violin, through its embracing of non-standard structure, really stands out in my mind when I come away from this release.

This EP is a skilled and mature debut, that shows off some incredibly atmopsheric ballads that wouldn’t be amiss on an epic arena. It seems that we just have to wait for everybody to work that out and start selling out Mr. Schamroth’s shows.

Picks:: Cold Wind Blowing, A Broken Violin Rating: 4/5

DANIEL SCHAMROTH

October 9, 2013 - Entertainment - Tagged: artist, Daniel Schamroth, music, Musician, singer/song writer, up and coming... I had the pleasure of interviewing Daniel Schamroth, a singer song writer based in Exeter whose voice is different, quirky and calming, his songs are acousticly played with an indie twist. With influences such as The Beatles, Oasis and Bob Dylan and music that flows straight from the soul I am sure our readers will love him. Listen to his song “Cold Wind Blowing” below.

How did you first get into music? I started playing guitar when I was Twelve and started writing songs immediately! I just love sitting with my guitar and playing with ideas. I then joined a band in my teens with friends and started gigging. I also joined a Beatles tribute band and performed all over the world which was great fun and taught me a lot about the business.

How would you describe your sound? hmmm? I guess I listen to a lot of Beatles, Noel Gallagher, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, things like that – so hopefully some of these influences come through? But I just try to sing straight from the heart and don’t worry too much about what comes out. I guess it’s ‘acoustic singer-songwriter’ type stuff.

What is your favourite song of all time? Wow! That’s a tough question to answer! I have favourite albums and artists and it changes constantly. I love ‘Slide Away’ by Oasis, that’s a great Rock n Roll love song.

If you could pick any artist in the whole world to duet with, who would it be? I dont really like duet’s, but If I could play along with any artist it would have to be John Lennon, the guy was a genius and I dont think anyone will ever write such beautiful, simple, perfect songs as him.

What is your biggest dream? To buy house and turn one room into a giant fish tank with glass all over the floors, walls and ceilings and fill it with fish – and then be able to sit in the middle and feel like you’re in the ocean. I’m not sure why!?

Do you have any gigs coming up soon? If so when and where? I just played a support gig with Ben Ottewell (from the band Gomez) which was great fun. I also have some shows coming up in Devon including a charity gig for Oxjam @ The Globe, Exeter with Andy Watts (ex Seahorses) on October 19th and will also be performing a live session on BBC Introducing in Devon in November – so keep an eye out for dates.

What does the future hold? I’ve been attracting some interest from the music industry and I’m hoping things develop to the stage where I can make a living doing what I love – playing my songs.

Do you write all of your own songs? What inspires you? Yeah I write all my own songs, I get inspired by all kinds of things; the weather, friends, tv commercials, anything that switches a light on in your head. I also love words and phrases, they can sometimes form ideas for lyrics.

What did you want to be when you were little? I wanted to be a footballer, that was everything to me. I played for my school team and got signed by a club and ended up having trials for England Youth when I was Fifteen. But then music (and girls) came along and changed all of that!

Where can we buy your songs? I’ve just finished my debut EP ‘Common Knowledge’ which EP will be available to pre order from ITunes on the 18th October and is officially released on 15th November. Or you can come along to a show and buy a CD from me And you can find my music on Sound Cloud

DANIEL SCHAMROTH – COMMON KNOWLEDGE (EP Review by Wordkrapht)

DANIEL SCHAMROTH – COMMON KNOWLEDGE June 24, 2013 · by Chris Axe ·

Singer/Songwriters are a dime a dozen in the indie world these days. You can go to any indie publication and easily find dozens of them from all over the world. The most important part of being a singer/songwriter type is storytelling. The ability to tell a story within a song isn’t as easy as it sounds. They not only have to have that ability, but they have to have a voice that people will find comforting enough to be able to listen the stories they have to tell. There is a certain level of personal trust that has to be earned for them to become somewhat successful within this genre. Daniel Schamroth is one of these artists that will immediately capture the trust of many with his experience and ability to tell a good story.

With his new EP Common Knowledge, Daniel explores several different sounds and landscapes as he tells his stories. With the use of a full band sound, he is able to convey his voice into the trust bubble of many. The song “Flicker” is a prime example of such ability as he displays his songwriting abilities. The song “Cold Wind Blowing” starts off with a clearing of the throat, then to a calming acoustic guitar. This song was a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest among several other submissions. He also has a video for the song that has been getting a lot of attention lately.

“Hearts Desire” captures a almost country sounding side of Daniel as the steel guitar glides throughout the song like a sail in the wind gracefully adding yet another dimension to the music. “Angel By My Side” is probably my favorite on the album with memorable lyrics and catchy rhythms.

There is no doubt that Daniel Schamroth was made to make the music he makes. I feel he is still searching for something unknown as most musicians are. This is just one path he is taking in that exploration to find himself. For some musicians this could last a lifetime but for some it’ll come in time. Although I believe he is on the right path to that self exploration and will continue to create music he hears in his heart that will eventually give him the ultimate sound he is looking for. Daniel’s journey will be a great one to follow and watch from a fan’s perspective, for the songs he is creating now are just a foundation to greatness that will soon follow. One must build a foundation before the walls are able to be raised.

From the instantly catchy opening track “Flicker” to the intimate ballad “Cold Wind Blowing” through to the more thumping “Heart’s Desire”, Daniel displays a variety of influences yet still retains his distinctive and vivid stripped back sound, having been likened to ‘a more sane version of Noel Gallagher’ with echoes of Ryan Adam’s and Richard Ashcroft along the way. His debut EP ‘Common Knowledge’ certainly confirms Daniel as a fast emerging song writing talent. With each track comes a different colour and mood, the themes of his song writing exploring (amongst other things) love, loss, hope and friendship. On first inspection ‘Common Knowledge’ promises to be the perfect laid back sing-along soundtrack for the summer and beyond… This is one for the lazy Sunday or the late night after party. His debut music video “Cold Wind Blowing“ has been causing a stir on YouTube with thousands of views already notched up. Whilst FMDB.co.uk voted it MP3 of the day, proclaiming; “Daniel Schamroth‘s debut cinematic tune ‘Cold Wind Blowing’ is heavenly, you can listen to it and feel instantly calmed, Daniel’s voice is something rare, and I’ll be stunned if this little wonder isn’t discovered pretty soon. An Acoustic singer-songwriter from Devon who may have a massive, life changing journey ahead.” ‘Common Knowledge’ offers a fleeting glimpse of Daniel Schamroth’s song writing skills and we can expect big things in the not too distant future from this boy with a guitar from Devon.
