HONEYSMITHS NEW ALBUM IS OUT !

Nelson musical duo The Honeysmiths reunite for an album release gig at Rhythm & Brown this Saturday, promising original tunes played in a relaxed venue. For vocalist and songwriter Sharon Ware, the return to Nelson follows a year spent teaching in Istanbul in the midst of a popular uprising. In mid-2012, when Ware returned to live in Nelson following an extended period teaching overseas, she booked a few gigs, and invited old friend and fellow musician Leo Barrer to join her on the stage at Liquid Bar. This led to an interview and performance on Fresh FM, for which the duo acquired the name The Honeysmiths. Over the next six months they gigged fairly prolifically, with an irregular slot at Bar Berlin and shows at East St, The Vic Rose and the Golden Bear. Over time they pieced together a three-hour repertoire of original songs and covers, with vocal harmonies, guitars, cajon, didgeridoo and omnichord. As 2012 drew to a close, Ware booked flights to the Northern hemisphere -"just when I'd finally learned the words to all the songs," Barrer jokes. In the final few weeks before she departed, he converted the corner of his lounge into a recording studio, and they began to lay down the guitar and vocal tracks for what would become the album, Darkness/Light. Ware secured a job teaching English in Istanbul early in 2013. A short time later, a conflict developed between some protesters and the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan around the planned development of Taksim square in central Istanbul, and she found herself enmeshed in a social and political uprising. So in between feedback regarding the vocal levels and newly added basslines, Sharon was now providing updates via email and Facebook on the swiftly developing conflict between the conservative government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and a people's protest movement. Despite tear gas in the streets, violent clashes between police and protesters, and entreaties from some of her close friends to book a plane ticket home, Sharon stayed on in Istanbul, teaching, protesting, and even gigging, though one performance had to be stopped halfway because there was too much gas coming off the street into the bar. The name of the album, Darkness/Light, both reflects recurring themes in the songs, and the setting in which it was constructed, with the duo on opposite sides of the globe. The gig kicks off at 8pm, with CDs available for $15 and digital downloads of the album for $10. Fans who can't make the album release party but would like a copy of the album can either visit the Honeysmith's Bandcamp page or get in touch via email (leohbarrer@gmail.com). - The Nelson Mail

Life is a loaded Gun

New Song written at 2.15 AM last night----in the style of Johnny Cash Life is a Loaded Gun Over in the 'States they call it destiny Back home in Ireland they call it treachery On the banks of the Yangste it is poverty Life is a loaded gun They say that the wild west never died Real men still carry them, fondled at their side The Soldiers and the Lawmen, sometimes weep with pride Life is a loaded gun Chorus; And their victims are laid down in rows In cities and in Shanty towns, that's the way it goes Mothers look for children with labels on their toes Life is a loaded gun The Devil sits in his rocking chair Smiling down upon the deep despair A swagger or a hideous curse, another soul slips in his purse Life is a loaded gun Men in high places drink a toast Spread their evil power from coast to coast They decide how the world is run With a life and a loaded gun

London

Left city of London after an intensive day taking in all the sights and sounds with Bobby,to Cambridge, walked through the ancient Eversdon wood onto a Roman road over 2000 years old. Found some fosilised shells, dinner at the Green Man, jammed until 12.30 with Euan Dunne---Beatles, Neil Young, the Band, and Blues--

Los Angeles trip

Started off the day at McCabes Guitar shop --an ugly old building with heaven tucked inside--every blues and rock muso has played there on their way up, and the walls are papered with unique mainly accoustic guitars banjos sitars, cellos ukes double bass and mandolins not counting the many other stringed instruments which I have no idea what they are! We have "bonded" with a few of the staff and today I started shooting vids of them doing their thing --playing! I have a new model Taylor GSMini the latest travellers guitar, so new that I have yet to have the pick up installed. Then we braved the buses of LA and caught three in a row to get to the Getty museum--Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Cezanne, All the Dutch masters from the 13th century to the 17th--The buildings are works of money plus imagination with imense curves and angles, linear masterpieces set in breathtaking immaculate gardens, we were there for hours, but still had to leave stuff out---as we weren't sure of the buses to get home we just stopped and asked people and made many friends this way--Latinos, south Koreans, French it was a hoot, but big relief to make it near to our hotel and being kiwis we walked, instead of catching the last bus.

Earthquake

WHO ARE WE?

Sometimes music reaches beyond definition, stretches us without placing demands. Silverwoodstudio creates the sound of now. An eclectic blend of contemporary and classic presents itself as an unexpected parcel that invites the listener to peel away as many layers as they choose. Whether you explore the depths, or prefer to lightly skim the surface, these diverse and talented musicians and studio artists will rise to meet you. Frontman Leo Haszard (Nelson) heads the core group, a threesome of family/whanau made up of Leo, his brother Jake Gabriel (West Coast) and father Rob Barrer (Marlborough). Rob has been actively involved in the creation of original music and performance art for over three decades. He recognised a talent in his sons, and although geographically distant, the three were drawn together by their passion for real and exploratory sound. Other featured artists include Lori Asquith, Ana Iti, Hannible, Phil Knapp and Robbie Reedy. Silverwoodstudio is more than a band, although they perform live at various events. Silverwoodstudio is a concept founded on traditions of deep musical roots, encompassing folk, blues and soul, blending into country and rock, and tempered by diverse multi-cultural influences. Each artist contributes from their own strengths and experience, ranging from self-taught through to formalised music training. They combine vocal, acoustic and primal sound with electronic and computerised instrumentation, using fusion to meld together a range of musical genres that refuse to be conveniently labelled. In a world bursting with over-produced and pre-packaged music, Silverwoodstudio takes a step sideways. Their music has a message, and the message is Listen. You decide. Don't be force-fed, processed, consumer-research based sounds, designed for mass consumption. Those days are over, the technology of now offers you individual choice. Independent music has experienced a groundswell of support and the people have spoken. Silverwoodstudio had 3 number one hits on the Cashbox Magazine charts in 2007, and went on to take a hat-trick of Golden Kayaks in the annual online Indie awards for the Independent Artist Company & Cashbox Magazine. Indie music is for bands that are not signed to Major labels, and can be found globally and over the internet on sites like: MySpace, itunes and iacmusic.com Check out the Studio's websites at - www.silverwoodstudio.net
