BELLVILLE — C.J. Jenkins is leaving the All God’s Children ministry in Mansfield to begin a new phase in his life in Nashville.
Born in Youngstown, Jenkins began working with children with the United Methodist Church in Elyria in a program called “Save Our Children.”
“I’ve been in Mansfield since February 1999, working with All God’s Children. I came to work with the United Methodist Church outreach program for young people,” Jenkins said. “We started after school, reaching out to the un-churched, unloved youth, giving them something to do. There are so many lives wasted, with no safety zone to trust.”
With a passion for young people, Jenkins has touched many lives while in Mansfield.
“I don’t know the impact, they grow up so fast. They tell me things, and I nurture and care for them,” Jenkins said. “I’m like a father figure; they pay attention and begin to blossom. I become family, like a surrogate daddy. There are a lot of success stories.”
Working with the Central United Methodist Church and the Rev. Jeff Croft, the All God’s Children program originally took place at the church on Sycamore Street in Mansfield, where Jenkins was the district worship leader.
When the church disbanded, Jenkins’ position expanded.
“I give Christian music for all people,” Jenkins said.
In 2007, Jenkins’ godmother, Mary Wilson of The Supremes fame, came to Mansfield to perform at the Renaissance Theatre.
“Without hesitating, she came to All God’s Children on Bowman Street,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins said he has ministered to the homeless, those who use drugs and people rejected by other churches. He said he ministers to “the forgotten” in the “church in the ’hood.”
All God’s Children services are on Tuesday evenings, where they serve a meal to all who attend. In some cases, it’s the only meal attendees will have that day.
“We work with a lot of different churches to provide that one meal every Tuesday,” Jenkins said. He believes in “a healthy soul, healthy body.”
“Now I’m going to Nashville to start a new life,” Jenkins said. “I’ll just let things develop. I have to go.”
A musician, Jenkins realized his love of music and song early in life.
“Growing up in a Christian church, I knew I was going to be a singer and musician. At the age of 5, I played the piano,” Jenkins said. “My brothers were all interested in sports, but I wasn’t. My sister says my first words were ‘holy, holy, holy,’ (from the familiar hymn).”
In 2003, Jenkins sang at the Miss Ohio Pageant in Mansfield.
He also has been a background singer for Wilson and for recording legends such as The Coasters, The Platters, The Flamingos and The Lettermen.
Jenkins’ good friend, Andy Brook, and Mike McPeek are coordinating a “celebration of his influence” to say goodbye to C.J. Jenkins.
“I met C.J. in Buck’s in Lexington in 2000 when we were singing karaoke,” Brook said. “That’s were our friendship began. He’s made a difference in so many lives here, including mine, without which I doubt that I’d even be alive today.”
The farewell to Jenkins event will be from 7 p.m. to midnight Dec. 7 at the China Club, 1217 Park Avenue West, Mansfield.
“Everyone is welcome and there’s no age limit,” Brook said.
Sam Romagnoli will be the karaoke DJ, and there will be a cash bar and refreshments.
Donations will be accepted to help Jenkins with his moving expenses.
Jenkins will leave for Nashville on Dec. 11.
