Recent Review from WERS radio

March 25, 2008 While many musicians wait years before having their songs merited with remixes by other artists, acoustic singer-songwriter Caitlyn Hessell claimed this distinction with her debut album. The English label Summer Rain Recordings put out an EP in February of her hit "Always There" with three electronic artists glitching and cutting her mystifying lyrics on a serving of breakbeats. For the sake of tradition, WERS brought Hessell into the studio to rekindle our love for her original acoustics. Hessell begins her set with the track "A Good Man" where unhurried string-plucking produces a dreamy landscape layered with her undulating vocals. Hessell's lyrical content is purely affected by the trials of love; fittingly, her lips tantalize the microphone on every breath. The melancholy guitar next drifts into "Always There" with a sweet stretching of Hessell's hypnotic voice and her mystifying poetics entrance us again with lines such as "Like the bad words that we say we censor all that we are." Her performance finishes with her newest song "Cheer up, you're not dead yet" lined with the softest of melodies. Hessell says, "It sounds like just another love song, but it’s not that at all. It really shadows much deeper things about growing up and taking control of your situation." This can be said about all of her songs, as the recent Boston University graduate of English drenches each track with poetic genius. As she continues her young music career, Hessell retains the best of intentions. Her work with Summer Rain Recordings is devoted to charity donations for African children with AIDS (via NextAid) and her Electronic friends on this label are gearing up for more remixes. Regarding the gems she has in store for us in the future, Hessell says "It’s sounding really good and I never thought I could pull it off!" Keep your ear and hearts open, fans. -Robby Gardner
