“The strength of the music and performances, together, is a mind-movie that pulls you in and won’t let you leave until the story ends,” Roberta Flack
"David Nathan never ceases to amaze me!" Chaka Khan
David Nathan's smokey mocha-flavoured vocal style evokes memories of a bygone era, of intimate dimly-lit '40s and '50s jazz clubs and yet has the kind of timeless quality associated with the likes of Nina Simone, his primary personal and musical mentor.
Born in London, David has loved music for as long as he can remember, discovering the music of Dionne Warwick, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin as a teenager.
David worked in record shops, wrote for different fan magazines and spent years working behind the scenes always secretly hoping that his voice might be heard and he would be ‘discovered’. He recorded demos, wrote songs and occasionally performed during a stay in the U.S. in cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Returning to London in 2009, he began recording in late 2010 with a trio comprising John Watson (piano, arranger), Miles Danso (bass) and Derek Nash (sax) and the results form the basis for the CD, "I Used To The Rule The World..." (the title taken from the first line of the Coldplay hit "Viva La Vida" which has been reinvented!) which includes the infectious ska-flavored "Sitting In The Park" (the Billy Stewart '60s hit), emotive readings of The Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" and "Wild Is The Wind" (most often associated with Nina Simone, David's primary musical inspiration).
A digital-only release "I Used To Rule The World" also includes a revisit to the Smokey Robinson-penned "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game," the Aretha Franklin gem, "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" and as bonus, a rendition of The Beatles' "Blackbird," all given David's inimitable musical makeover, as well as soulful readings of Elton John's "Your Song" and the Bacharach-David gem, "The Windows Of The World" among other tunes.
With great artists like Roberta Flack, Marlena Shaw and Jean Carne among his supporters, David's aim is to appeal to the generations that love the music of Sade, Norah Jones, Mose Allison and of course, Nina Simone, his primary musical mentor to whom he pays tribute during live shows.
"David Nathan sings from the heart for the love of it all. David nurtured and helped bring blues, soul and rhythm & blues music to London and subsequently blues, soul and rhythm & blues music nurtured and inspired David to record this project. "Reinvention" is an honest and personal expression of music he holds dear, infused with raw passion and sincerity." Stix Hooper (formerly of The Crusaders)
"You waited for us to fall off the charts before doing this CD, David! It's great, a mixture of blues, jazz...and soul!" James Ingram
"The thing I like best is that you're not trying to imitate anybody; you have your own sound and style. Plus, your choice of material is excellent. Production is terrific, too. Well done!" Singer and music historian Billy Vera
