Hog was formed in mid-2009 after the break up of their former band, Tooth, paring the lineup down to guitar bass and drums. Playing a brand of Doom metal that is as nimble as it is thick, they recorded a three song demo with Will Evans of Aleph Audio. In August of 2010 Alec Ferrell joined the group on guitar, and the new four-piece ventured to the infamous Jam Room studio in Columbia SC to record their debut EP, titled Archetypes with Kylesa member and noted producer Philip Cope. Archetypes was released May 17th, 2011 by Churchkey Records. In early 2013 Hog recorded their first full-length release with Greg Klaiber at Caveman Studio in Durham, NC, to be released later this year.
“Wallowing in melodically sludgtastic doses of Mastodon, C.O.C., and crossover crust, Hog’s debut EP ARCHETYPES is an aural concussion of the best kind. Produced by Kylesa’s Philip Cope, the four tracks on ARCHETYPES blend downtuned fuzzy dirges with galloping metal riffage for a Metallica meets Crowbar collision of blunt force goodness.
The four tunes on ARCHETYPES are all obtusely heavy tracks, with roots in the noisy, post-doom sound of bands like Kylesa, Howl, Black Tusk, etc, but Hog’s got a crazy knack for incorporating melody into such a dense formula.
ARCHETYPES has the potential to be all things to all people. It’s doom enough to satisfy the beardos, metal enough to get some circle pit action going, and experimental enough to get the wallflowers interested. If any of the bands mentioned in this review tickle your fancy, then consider Hog a band that you’ll want to get more familiar with.”

".... (Hog’s) Archetypes EP is a recent masterpiece of Southern art metal...."
Corbie Hill - Independent Weekly
“The band debuted a new eight and a half minute psychedelic metal masterpiece that dropped jaws and glued every single person to their spot on the floor. I can’t remember the last time I had that intense of a ”HOLY SHIT” moment at a Durham gig.If this is the direction in which Hog is heading, they’re gearing up to be unstoppable. You need to go see them soon. There’s something wrong if they’re no getting scouted by national labels before the year is up.”
