Three distinct songwriters with their own styles, Ryan Furstenberg, Ryan Lassiter, and Dan Shearin steer their tunes in different directions until they've reached a destination often that they had never expected. In the fall of 2010, Uncle Mountain began turning heads after their show at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium when they opened for Band of Horses in their hometown of Asheville, NC. Now touring the eastern US, playing regional festivals and cultural events, Uncle Mountain has seen a bloom in regional support with the release of their second album, Miles of Skyline. The result is one that they are proud of both in headphones and on stage, blending the organic soul of rock and folk with lively percussion, rich harmonies and colorful textures from all of their favorite music from around the globe.
“Expressive folk-rock, off-kilter experimentation, road-worn psychedelics and emotional songwriting. They manage anti-folk grit alongside the melodic strength of '70s rock, but their hooks move with an arena-ready utility.”
Jordan Lawrence - The Independent
"When we pulled in the band Uncle Mountain, from Asheville was playing... The harmonies were super complex as if they sat down with a piano and came up with the most difficult groups of notes that sound good together and then practiced the ever-living shit out of it until it became 2nd nature. I dug it"
Keller Williams - Keller Williams Blog
"Hard to describe with a quick and easy genre tag - everything from traditional Americana to modern Indie Pop - sounds rich, layered, lively, and most surprisingly, cohesive."
Mike Breen - CityBeat (Cincinnati, OH)
“An inspiring marriage of rhythmic grooves and razor-sharp vocal harmonies with an Appalachian tinge, Uncle Mountain will not go unnoticed.”
Dane Smith - The Mountain Xpress
“The Beach Boys of the mountains.”
Robin Tolleson - BlueRidgeNow.com
“Indie-rockers Uncle Mountain are immediately recognizable with their smooth harmonies and poppy lyrics.”
Mountain Xpress
“Uncle Mountain’s sound seems designed to fill the idiosyncratic folk-rock band slot on movie soundtracks. That’s far more of a compliment than a diss; the lilting harmonies and adventurous arrangements recall accomplished, similar-minded acts like Guster and Dispatch. Basically, Uncle Mountain makes the kind of music that you could see appealing equally to the jam-rock crowd as to the more open-minded indie-rock fans.”
K. Petersen - Free Times
“The combination of Uncle Mountain's music and lyrics are absolutely compelling. Together, they touch me in ways I've never experienced and as I listen, I see dance. I never grow tired of their work.”
Tommi Galaska, choreographer - ECU
“Lush vocal harmonies and tasteful instrumental work provide a strong background for the band's super catchy songwriting. Uncle Mountain has all the makings of one of those bands that manage to get really big really fast.”
Dave Brewer - Shout Magazine
