Biography:

Any true fan of great electronic music should instantly recognize Niko Marks as one of the originals of the Detroit house/techno movement. He began recording in the early part of the nineties, releasing innovative and soulful house, techno plus a mixture of other music genres. The wide variety of genres he takes on, only testifies to his adaptability and talent in being able to engage a multitude of different sounds and in the process create futuristic music.
It would later be the fortunate acquisition of a Fender Rhodes electric piano, Korg DDD5 drum machine and a Fostex 4-track recorder, which marked the beginning of the rise of one of today’s most innovative artists. Niko is what you might label as a triple threat as his talent can be found in the roles he smoothly balances as a vocalist, musician, producer and songwriter.
One of the many forward moving phases in his musical career included teaming up with Submerge Records founder, Michael Banks to formulate a vocal house production crew called “Members of the House”. Niko also collaborated with Raphael Merriweathers under alias group band names, Unit 2 and 365 Black. This particular mission stemmed forth the high-spirited grooves, "Sunshine" - released on Happy Records, "Homeland" and "Keep Your Head Up" written by Niko and Merriweathers - released on 430 West Records.
In the infamous year of 1999, he produced a project called "Niko Marks & The City Boy Players" which included musician friends from Detroit. The project moved from techno/house to soul, R&B, Disco to hard electronic - resulting in much fun, lots of grooves, and a profusion of great vocals and classic songs.
As an artist, his releases have been signed by some of the world’s most established recording labels: Vanguard, Ideal, EMI, New Religion, R&S, Crammed Discs, React, Delsin, Strictly Beatdown, Yore Records, Planet E, Submerge and Puzzlebox. Niko has also lent his skills to remixes for artists such as Tom Tom Club, Andy Vaz, Herschel Boone, Aux 88, Helder Russo, Universal Principles, Amp Fiddler, Eric D. Clark and many more.

His music has been featured by DJ’s such as Dave Clarke, Giles Peterson, DJ Fingers, Carl Craig, and Andrew Duke, to name a few.
His current collaborations are with producers and artists: Tom Tom Club, Kid Ginseng, Andy Vaz, Herschel Boone, Davina Bussey, Carlos Nilmmns and Helder Russo. Amongst the latest album projects are: “Soul Meter”, “Disclosure”, “Conduit”, “Engine Ear 1” and “C’est Bon” (LP), in collaboration with Carlos Nilmmns .
An artist who defies generic boundaries, Niko continues to write, produce and release cutting-edge music primarily for U2XProductions. If you like what Niko Marks has been creating so far…you’re in for a revolutionary ride….

“Q: While listening to your music there is a certain width and depth in regards to soundscape, something many producers have a hard time achieving. How important do you think it is to achieve this especially in Electronic Music? A: Well, because there is such a vast styling to Electronic Music, in order to stand out I think its very important to have an aspect that is unreached by others. In a sense, with me it’s composition— traditional composition and usually I do more keyboard work then the average say DJ or sample producer. I use very little samples and it could be because I started off playing. I was mainly a studio musician and when I got into Electronic Music it was kind of like different genres of tradition composition and straight up dance. So it can be very important in terms of setting oneself apart from the masses.”

“Get By Me (Vintage Mix) The “Get By Me” Alt and Vintage mixes were the last two tracks I worked on in Glasgow before leaving Scotland for France. Its been a few years now since II worked on these versions so its all a bit hazy. I do remember this being an instrumental track originally. I sent the first idea over to Niko in Detroit and we ended up doing a few different versions. I really like the versions Niko did, he used more parts of Davina's recordings which didn’t end up in these versions like big harmonies and more R&B elements. I remember it was around Nov 2012 and there was one arrangement Niko created which he had sent to me via email, it was more club sounding bigger 909 kick and better drums and more soul elements added using clav sounds from his Nord lead and bass lines. The the track was produced in three studios in three cities. Glasgow, Detroit and later New York. Niko and I have a great working process and we trust each others judgement on our productions.”

“A1. I Can’t Stop Once again, Niko provides us with a timeless slice of undiluted soul with moving lyrics that scream from the depths of the heart. A2. All About Love Oh yeah! Niko brings a heavy serving of techno-funk to the table with this slamming fast-paced groove, which manages to fuse disparate elements together to form a highly coherent and incredibly funky one. B1. Bring Back the Soul A deep & atmospheric eulogy to the true essence of house music. A sexy low-slung late-night groove powered by raw drums overlaid by melancholic lyrics urging us to remember, “Whenever house people come together there’s always a positive vibration” B2. Technology This is Niko getting seriously “funky with the machines”. Highly original tech-funk experimentation with attitude. http://www.youlicense.com/Artist/ArtistStore.aspx?ID=187185”
