Biography:

Jessica Long & The New Kind’s captivating songs, incredible vocals, and unique style create a refreshing new alternative sound that finds its roots in vintage rock and indie pop.
Jessica’s debut album, Painted (released Feb 2011) produced by Grammy-nominated producer Billy Smiley, features a pallet of Jessica’s original compositions that showcase her exceptional song-crafting skills. The band, originally designed as a backing band to support Painted, quickly developed into Jessica Long & The New Kind, and has been touring nationally ever since.
A fusion of Jessica’s song-writing skills and gorgeous vocals, along with the outstanding musicality of the band, Jessica Long & The New Kind has developed a fresh new sound emerging on the scene. The Independent Weekly describes them as “possessing a voice that tempers charming twang with powerful resonance, and a sound that pairs mainstream rock muscle with the glitzy overtones of Nashville.” The Pinhook illustrates Jessica Long & The New Kind as “gorgeous vocals steeped in folk rock tradition meets the clever, dangerously catchy wordplay and hooks of indie bands like New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene.”

Jessica Long & The New Kind recently returned from a U.S. tour promoting their newest EP "Geography", produced by up-and-coming Phoenix-based producer Jonathan Russo, and have just released a music video for their newest single "Sylvia" which is available on youtube. Currently they are in the studio working on new material, releasing date TBA.

Press:

“Pulling from her early influences, as well as Radiohead, Ryan Adams and '90s alt- rock ("I used to steal my brother's Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana albums"), the results find the young songstress hanging out in Grace Potter's neck of the woods, plying an accessible brand of pop-rock that's tinged with roots but highlighted by Long's soulful pipes.”
Spencer Griffith - The Indy Weekly

“(. . .) the Durham quintet seems poised for a big breakthrough with its polished pop-rock. The band propels dynamic tunes such as "Simple" and "1234" with enormous hooks. Long's enchanting voice commandeers the spotlight, whether the New Kind are playing arena-sized rockers, slightly folky acoustic jangles, charming ukulele-driven ditties or graceful piano ballads. Between Long's vocal talent and her band's versatility and flash, it's a combination that should have labels lurking soon.”
Spencer Griffith - The Indy Weekly

“Possessing a voice that tempers charming twang with powerful resonance, and a sound that pairs mainstream rock muscle with the glitzy overtones of Nashville, Jessica Long could be one lucky break away from a crossover smash.”
Jordan Lawrence - Independent Weekly

“Jessica Long is a woman with a voice that you canʻt help but listen to...Long brings a balance to her songs that is hard to find elsewhere, and she works so well with her talents. Itʻs a wonder she doesnʻt have more albums under her belt; she sounds like sheʻs been at this for at least a decade already.”
Malia Thornton - This Coast

"A lot of female performers nowadays can play behind a piano or guitar and completely hold an entire crowd’s attention. Jessica Long plays both of those instruments, commands an entire room, and performs like a true rock and roll artist."
Crystal Serowka - Sounds That Matter

"Jessica’s voice was stellar. It had that raw, rough edged quality we (see: me) love in female rock leads, but with a touch of innocence that captivates the audience and makes us wonder what the message behind her songs really is. She sang, played keyboard and various guitars through out the set…all done well. Her band was as high energy as she was. They moved to the music in an organic way that really showed how much they were into what they were doing."
Raleigh On The Rocks

"Jessica Long - Gorgeous vocals steeped in folk rock tradition meets the clever, dangerously catchy wordplay and hooks of indie bands like New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene."
The Pinhook

"...a singer/songwriter who stands at the cusp of a music career [...] she is ready for wherever the music takes her."
Dawn Baumgartner Vaughan - The Durham Herald Sun

"We felt we needed a serious kick in the pants today -- maybe it's the gloomy weather, maybe just because it's Wednesday. We found it in "1 2 3 4" -- a song lifted from the debut album Painted by 25-year-old Durham, NC native Jessica Long. Taking a simple riff and moving it into the roll-down-the-windows and turn-it-up territory, Long makes sure we understand that there's "guitarist" right there along with "singer/songwriter".
Direct Music

“[...] "these guys are young. YOUNG young, which means they have time and energy to make some serious waves. And from what I'm reading on the webs, it would appear that is what appears to be happening!" ”
Karla Anne - Aural Memories
