But, on August 11, the situation changed when he took the stage at the LONG BEACH JAZZ FESTIVAL in 'THE SOUL OF JAZZ' series to the surprise of the audience. Unfortunately, Phil's wife, Lillian, was berated & physically assaulted by one of the Long Beach Jazz security guards as she attempted to return back stage as Phil left the stage after his performance. The Perrys declined pressing charges, but it was quite a spectacle as she was lifted from the ground by those who witnessed the entire assault. The guard was about 6'4" and 300 pounds... NOT the return reception to Southern California that the Legendary Singer and Wife Lillian (married 40 years) had looked forward to in LONG BEACH, CA.
