Kurt Henry played his first notable coffeehouse gig in 1968 at the Village Gaslight—the same year he began college as an English Major with the intention of studying everything and anything “to become a better songwriter.” Song and poetry are the same for him. His songs are full of allusions to poetry and poets, such as Robert Herrick (among history’s greatest lyricists) and William Morris (Kurt has published two articles relating to Morris’s epic poem, Sigurd the Volsung—the greatest English epic). Songs from his five recorded collections are notable for their euphony. He writes endless revisions in the hope that his words, without music, should have the sound, as well as the layers of emphasis one would find in an anthology of great poems. He is the mainstay guitarist and leader of The Kurt Henry Band. His album, Flaming June, says fellow artist Amy Fradon “is just impeccable...it has the effect on me of falling into a lush, mossy cave…a magical sound.” In addition to a fifty year career in music, Kurt has taught literature on the secondary and college level.
