Guyanese singer and flautist, Ruth Osman, has been performing since childhood. Her passion for music has led to her appearance in a variety of events - from the church stage to national and international concerts.
Over the past few years, she has honed her skills in the jazz genre. From performing with the jazz trio, Jacoustik, to working with a variety of musicians and bands, she makes full use of all opportunities to develop her craft.
One such collaboration with Jason Dasent of Studio Jay Recording Ltd. led to the production of her debut album, 'Letting Go', which was released in July 2013.
She is a professional writer and composes poetry, which become an intrinsic part of her performances, adding another dimension to her music.
Her inspiration for her music and performance comes from the desire "to remind people of the fragility and beauty that is part of the human condition.”
“Song after song, be it Ned Jones and Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” or her own compositions, with a dash of poetry, she won cheers from an appreciative crowd. Appreciation was at its peak though, when she showed her skill as an excellent flautist.”
Neil Marks - Kaieteur News
“Ruth Osman and her back-up musical ensemble, true to form, worked some jazz magic from a moving, soulful, reggae-tinged rendition of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” to Shadow’s (Winston Bailey) “Dingolay” which was given the full royal jazz treatment, with an original composition “New Blues” thrown in along the way.
Osman excelled, with violinist Janine Xavier stealing the spotlight.”
Karl E Cupid - Newsday
"Jazz singer Ruth Osman put down a sweet and soulful performance on November 25. While outside was rainy and cold, inside Dr!nk Wine bar in Woodbrook, candles glowed, music flowed, and Osman's voice kept her audience warm."
Gillian Moore - Trinidad Guardian
“Osman, charmingly Caribbean in a bright yellow jumpsuit by The Cloth, chunky jewelry and fauz-hawk hairdo, delivered more than two hours of music, including jazz, R&B, kaiso, samba and even disco. The band pulled off a professional performance in a concert that showed Osman's continuing development as a fine artiste.”
Gillian Moore - The Guardian
“Osman captured the complete attention of the audience with the clarity of her diction, the sweetness of her highs and yes, her lows and the intelligence of her interpretation of mood for each of her selections.”
Deborah John - Sunday Express
“Ruth Osman commandeered attention like no other performer was able to do.
Wrapped with passion, soul and a whole lot of jazz, Osman, launched into one of her own compositions. Her voice was simply mesmerizing.”
Neil Marks - Kaieteur News, The awards, the show and the attendance – Whose Accolade?"
“Ruth Osman ..., stunned the audience last night with a breath taking performance. Her performance was the stunner of the evening, simply incredible. Her vocal range is astonishing and her voice is simply classic.... Brilliant......”
Mu-Mu - Keep it Real - Guyana Times
“To say that Ruth Osman could be the next big thing in jazz for this country would not be wrong.... Ruth Osman basically stood on that stage and gave us art. Her voice floated across the National Cultural Centre (NCC) painting a picture of painful, passionate love...”
