Buffalo NY singer songwriter Dee Adams writes and sings punchy, poetic, acoustic guitar driven songs drenched in hooks and harmonies. Reviews have coined Dee’s style as “earthy”, “sweet to spunky”, and have said that she has “lyrics that speak to the heart and mind”. With elements of blues, rock, and folk, Dee’s voice is the centerpiece of her lyrically and melodically lilting songs, which range in subject matter from birds, to guns, to countless themes of human nature and social maladies.
'Mile Marker', the new album by Dee Adams And Her Band, is reminiscent of the daydreamed combination of Indigo Girls-meets-The Rolling Stones. Rich in lyric and vocal expression, each song is a vignette of love and loss punctuated by texture and color, with the instrumentation and vocals creating a sound that is raw yet tender.
Among Dee’s accolades and accomplishments is her appearance on the 2002 Songs Inspired By Literature compilation. Having been named Grand Prize Winner of the Songs Inspired by Literature songwriting contest, Dee’s song “Pennsylvania” can be found alongside tracks donated by David Bowie, Roseanne Cash, Steve Earle, and Tom Waits. You can buy the album at artistsforliteracy.org, amazon.com or at cdbaby.com.
In February 2003, Dee’s EP with traveling band The Roadtrippers, Taking My Time, was released on Sage Indie Music. A lush, well produced set of songs that sent the band to gigs all over New York City, including Arlene’s Grocery and the legendary CBGB's. The band members all moved to different cities and pursued multiple projects, but Dee continues to play those songs both acoustically and with her current line up of musicians.
In 2007, American Songwriter magazine placed Dee at #29 in the Top 50 Amateur Songwriters listing, in recognition of her song “Good Hand, Bad Gun”, which will appear on her next full length electric album, Widow, to be released in late 2011.
Diverse as well as particular about the songs she plays, Dee not only plays solo, but with her own full rock band, sings vocal jazz standards with The Billy Baroo Jazz Ensemble, and sings backing harmonies with several Buffalo based bands. The Dee Adams Band are a twangy, organic-yet-electrifying version of the acoustic songs she's written, blended with slightly obscure but tasteful covers such as Tom Waits' “Alice”, and Patty Griffin’s “Flaming Red” to name a few, to create a sound that comes out as alt-country edged folk.
In 2005, Dee Adams was named Top Solo Acoustic in the Buffalo Music Awards, and 2011 brought Dee the accolade of Best Original Acoustic Act in Artvoice’s Best of Buffalo Awards, as well as Top Original Acoustic Solo in the Nightlife Magazine Buffalo Music Awards. Not only a performing songwriter, Dee also hosts one of Buffalo’s most popular songwriter's showcases at the Sportsmen’s Tavern on Monday nights; she gives voice lessons to young children; works on the performance committee for the Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts; previously produced the acclaimed Wednesday Night Concert Series on WBFO, Buffalo's NPR station, booking local original music to be showcased live on air; and is regularly hired as a session vocalist for independent producers and bands in the region.
Immersed in music in every corner of life, Dee Adams continues to write, sing, play, and teach to become part of the rich musical tapestry that weaves throughout western New York.
“Dee Adams has every characteristic of a great songwriter – a unique way with words; a powerful voice to deliver them; the drive to take on new styles and subjects; and a love of the craft that leads her to learn from and guide others.
”
Seamus Gallivan - The Good Neighborhood
“Adams’ attention to musical detail—the voicing of chords; the subtle movement through periods of tension and release in her chord progressions; the care put into the selection of harmonies—further separates her from many of her troubadour peers...a musician familiar with both sophistication and nuance in composition and performance”
Jeff Miers - Buffalo News - Gusto
“Dee & The Housecats is one of the city’s strongest roots-rock outfits, combining solid players with great tunes for a guaranteed night of fun with no regrets (well, depending on how much you like Flying Bison, of course).”
Gabrielle Boullianne - Buffalo Rising, Buffalo NY
“’Pennsylvania’ is one of the best songs I have heard by an unknown artist in the last 10 years, and her performance of it - spectacular!”
Tony Gross - GFI Productions
“She continues to give the listeners what they want on this folk-rock endeavor containing six songs of great substance. With lyrics that sing to the heart & mind, Adams' vocals range from sweet to spunky, sometimes recalling Sheryl Crow, with the hooks on ‘Paper Sky’ just primed for radio.”
Michele Picardo - Freetime Magazine, Rochester NY
“Part stream of consciousness, part letter to the universe, part experience from the past. Extremely poignant lyrics”
Lois Price - 88.7FM WLUW, Chicago
