I was named after the song "Misty" by Johnny Mathis. I wonder if my mother knew it would encourage me to become a musician. Growing up on the west side of Detroit, Ive' always heard and searched for eclectic sounds. Whether it was cars bunking horns, mufflers scraping the ground, grandma's calling their kids in for supper, or us playing and recreating hand games. Sometimes it would be the sounds my mother made while cooking and the clattering of dishes when she washed them.
I didn’t grow up in a quiet house. My mother helped us make our own instruments; wax paper on combs, beans in milk cartons, rubber bands on shoe boxes. I come from a family were my grandma pounded only the black keys on our piano with her knuckles, which made sense to me at the time. I tapped danced on the kitchen floor with pennies taped to the bottom of my church shoes around my grandmother as she cooked. Often times, I would sneak down the basement stairs to play my cousin’s trombone. Oh how I tried to make a sound, but I didn’t know it needed a mouth piece.
I am a product of a creative family. My family puts on talent showcases and performs for company as if we were on broad-way. Following the foot steps of my family I studied violin at the age of 7, but soon after I was removed because of my love for bubble gum! I didn't give up there, the following year, I started playing the flute. My flute and musical compositions help me express who I am today even when I may not be aware sometimes. Music is a part of me and how I operate. The Music Educator, Flutist, Vocalist, Songwriter, Producer, Poet, & sound seeker... I love Music..~
