Eric Himan may be a staple in his current city of Tulsa, but more and more, there are people outside of Oklahoma who are taking notice of him. The singer/songwriter performs with ease behind a piano or with a guitar in hand, and what he performs is well-crafted pop originals that continue to make people pay attention. Three times listed onOklahoma Magazine’s annual Best of the Best list and a multiple winner of Urban Tulsa Weekly’s Absolute Best of Tulsa awards, the Penn State graduate can be heard on SiriusXM’s The Coffee House and is endorsed by Fender Guitars. Oh, and he was named a winner of a little something called The Singer/Songwriter Awards from wearelistening.org, which is a pretty big deal, since it’s a national award that delivered his music to networks like MTV, VH1, and E!
Currently touring to support Gracefully, his latest (and crowd-sourced) release, Himan continues to push his craft forward, stretching in new musical directions at every turn. In addition to finding Eric on the piano for this recording, the release also sees him working with a full-fledged horn section—a far cry on the production scale from his days of playing stripped-down acoustic folk-rock in State College, Penn. He’s also joined by some heavy hitters such as drummer Brandon Holder (on loan from Leon Russell’s band) and bassist Matt Hayes (Wayne Newton, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey).
Himan flexes his writing muscles on Gracefully, from “Waiting for Thunder,” inspired by Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani student shot by the Taliban for promoting girls’ education to the Latin-tinged “Red Hot Tears,” to the title track that evokes his recently deceased grandmother who help raise him, teaching him to, as he puts it, “live life like you taught me: Gracefully.”
