The Black Flies released Roots and Roll in August of 2013. It was finally saw the light of day with help from their fans and a successful Indiegogo campaign. Their third album was released in time to be nominated for 4 Niagara Music Awards. They ended up winning best Original band. They have been performing live in the Niagara Region and trying to promote the new music as much as an independent band can. It all started when The Black Flies formed in the bitter cold month of January, 2007. A few rehearsals under the belt and it was off with songs ready to go from both song-writers. There was a natural flow & mutual respect between all 4 members and they did not waste any time getting down to business.
In the spring of 2008, the band recorded their first sessions of songs, which turned into their highly
acclaimed debut record "Road Ahead". They won the Niagara Music Awards 2009 Group of the Year award, as well as being nominated for Best Album, Best Rock Band & Video of the Year for "You were Miles".They also had the song Train used in the Canadian Indie Feature Film "GravyTrain".
In early 2009 the band recorded the follow up "Middle of the Night".They won the 2010 Folk Group of the Year at the Niagara Music Awards for that album.
“For their part, The Black Flies will perform the new album in its entirety, which will be a feast for fans who have waited four years for the follow-up to 2009’s Middle of the Night. A mature-sounding group right out of the gate, the band now sounds entrenched in its rootsy Neil Young/Blue Rodeo vibe – lead-off track Blinded By the Sun could have come off the last Wilco album.
As always, the playing is tight and the production by Dean Malton impeccable. Aside from the songwriting, once again anchored by Goold and guitarist Jeremy Vokey, they remain one of Niagara’s best sounding bands.”
