Hailing from one of the roughest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, Jorge Luis Chacon, better known as Mekz Uno "The Black Mage", has come from being an ambitious basement scholar of dusty hip-hop production, to an astute beatmaker of legend in the Philly underground scene. Obsessed with the gritty production styles of early-mid 90's eastcoast hip-hop and late 90's west coast sounds, he set out to make his mark. Amalgamating different boom-bap styles with cartoon/video-game inspired samples mixed with "spacey marijuana-laced" tones and sounds, he went on to create a genre of hip-hop instrumentation he called "Saturday Morning Funk". Soon after, he and his brother, "The Nature Boy" IC Flair (now known as Cicada EMP) formed the Grease Monkeys, providing booming party tracks with a powerful message and performed various shows opening for the likes of Killah Priest, Wise Intelligent, Chief Kamachi, and Digable Planets and Cosmic Fink Orchestra member Cee Knowledge The Doodlebug. Around the same time the Grease Monkeys was formed, Mekz, in collaboration with Bronx MC godhead The General, godhead's manager/wife Sabina Diaz, and engineer Ahd Child formed THOR Takeover Records, an independent recording label dedicated to the establishment of new order in the urban music industry. After delivering his first mixtape "The Chronicles of Sars Simian", and seeing potential in a recording career, he went on to release "The Black Waltz Vol. One" EP, a collection of emotionally-charged social commentary that set the tone sonically for what his sound was to shape into.
Mekz went on to release various projects including the Grease Monkeys "The Fix" EP, the follow-up EP to Black Waltz: Vol. 1 "Hold You Over", various instrumental albums including the epic "Who Made Dat Beat!?!" and "The Elixer" series, along with the "Remembrance" series, which was a dedication to his family and legacy, work with various artists from around the globe, as well as numerous mixtape appearances nationally and internationally, respectively.
In 2010, tired of "hip-hop" blogs and online media outlets constantly overlooking true indy artists, only giving exposure to covert "indy" artists backed by corporate interests, he felt it was important for these indy artists to have an outlet to promote and expose their music. "Spellcast Radio", an independently-run media company dedicated to "pushing the independent Hip-Hop artist", was conceived. Originally created as a mixtape series, Spellcast Radio has expanded into cyberspace as a blog which exclusively features a more diverse hip-hop selection. With a growing cult following, home and abroad, Spellcast Radio gives exposure to independent Hip-Hop artists worldwide. The Spellcast motto is, "If we feel it, we'll spin it."
Now a solo artist, and determined to take his message to the next level, he embarks in 2019 with The Elixer III, the continuation of the Elixer instrumental series and preparing to release his latest mixtape, "Bald Boul" a concept mixtape inspired by his experiences growing up in the West Kensington section of North Philadelphia.
