Benjamin Brown is a singer/songwriter now living in Northern California.
He is a self-taught guitarist who is mainly inspired by the musicians from the aspiring immersion of blues artists in the early part of the 20th Century.
Born in Chicago, his family ultimately settled in rural areas of Northern California. At age 16, soon after Ben found his love for guitar, he suffered an accident leaving him with three quarters of a ring finger on his right hand – what he now uses for the signature beat you hear in most of his music.
Singing and playing as a solo artist with a smoky draw, influenced by artists in the likes of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howlin' Wolf, Blind Willie Johnson, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Doors and The Rolling Stones (to name a few). His lyrics suggest a sense of salvation, as he writes about triumphing a ruthless evil. However, his seemingly melancholy sound, when listened to closely, encourages an uplifting message
“Folk Ballads and Howling Blues Tunes Find Their Place in Rasputin Berkeley: Live In-store Review, Benjamin Brown
On another beautifully sunny afternoon at our Berkeley store, our ears were treated to
the finger picking marvel that is Benjamin Brown. Shoppers took a moment to embrace
the ease of this Sunday afternoon to the sounds of Brown’s authentic tunes–and smiled up at his passionate singing.
His blues guitar style is unique and intriguing– at 24 years old he plays with great soul, and is inspired by greats such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Howlin’ Wolf. At age 16 he lost three quarters of a ring finger on his right hand, which gives his sound the signature beat that can be heard in most his music. The balance between slow folk ballads and faster howled songs offered a unique sound to each original song. Keep an eye out for Brown.”
