Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura are a powerful, all-wāhine production led by internationally acclaimed producer, performer, and cultural practitioner Māmā Mihirangi. Known globally as the Queen of Loops and Tohunga o Te Whē, she blends traditional Māori sound with contemporary bass, live looping, rich harmonies, taonga pūoro, and powerful karanga to create immersive, high-impact performances that move both heart and spirit.

Songlines Magazine (UK):
“The Queen of Loops is back in force… a powerful show of stunning contemporary Māori music, dance, language, and stories.”

Mihirangi’s compositions are grounded in the wisdom of a life dedicated to revitalising her lineage, ancestral knowledge, and expression through the living vibration of te reo Māori, and ceremonial performance. Her work poetically connects the political with the spiritual, blending ancient oral traditions with contemporary soundscapes. She invites audiences, of all backgrounds, to feel, to remember, and to be transformed.

Alongside her, The Māreikura bring the stage to life as living expressions of wāhine Māori excellence. They are not simply traditional dancers and singers, they are carriers of whakapapa in motion, and guardians of women's traditions. Their performances are woven with haka, poi, titi toria, waiata-a-ringa, and mau rākau, the traditional Māori martial art.

Their use of taiaha and weaponry is precise, disciplined, and deeply intentional. Far from spectacle, their movement is ceremony. Every action honours the tūpuna they descend from and the Atua they invoke. They confront and awaken, restore and uplift, bringing both ancestral memory and contemporary relevance to the forefront.

Roots Music Canada:
“Their mesmerizing fractal flow and otherworldly theatrics invoked a rapturous level of being…”

Ali Campbell (UB40):
“In 30+ years of touring the world, I’ve never seen anything like her… Mihirangi belongs on stage.”

ABC Australia:
“A voice of immense power and beauty… complete showstoppers.”

Together, Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura deliver a performance that is both deeply rooted and globally resonant. It’s more than a show, it’s a spiritual, cultural, and sonic journey that holds space for transformation. Their artistry bridges worlds: ceremony and stage, past and future, ancestral and modern.

Australian Music Magazine:
“One of the most talked-about bands at Bluesfest… visually stunning and sonically beautiful.”

Audiences leave feeling lifted, grounded, and changed, by the truth, beauty, and fearless authenticity of these wāhine in their full expression.

Press:

“The show was filled with loops of vocalisations including different sounds of breath, bird calls and atmospheric sounds that related to her (Mihirangi's) deep-seated connection with Mother Earth. Mama Mihirangi not only had the most incredible vocal and tonal range, but the control she had over those high notes was incredible. The performance itself incorporated cultural elements and symbols that engaged the crowd and the performers enthusiasm was infectious.”
by Virag Dombay - Broadway World Brisbane

“Mama Mihirangi and The Mareikura were back again and were definitely one of the most talked about bands at the event. Visually stunning and beautiful sounding, our photographer Jason Rosewarne had a ball shooting them.”
Greg Phillips - Bluesfest AU Review - Australian Music Mag

“Australian Musician was keen to experience Mama Mihirangi & The Mareikura. Having seen Mihirangi more than decade ago at a music trade show playing solo with just a loop pedal, today’s extravaganza was a revelation. Gorgeous harmonies and a visually stunning performance.”
Bluesfest AU Review - Australian Musician

“Not only had I never seen Mama Mihirangi and the Mareikura, I’d never really seen anything quite like them, combining traditional Maori song and the very much in vogue practice of looping beats and vocals. Mama Mihirangi has a voice of both immense power and beauty. Those big notes were complete showstoppers.”
Dan Condon - Bluesfest AU Review - The ABC Australia

“New Zealand’s Māmā Mihirangi & the Māreikura took the stage by storm with a powerful show of stunning contemporary Māori music, dance, instruments, language, stories and costumes. The queen of live loops is back in force after a break from touring and this new show is her best yet”
Marc Fournier - Songlines Magazine UK

“Mama Mihirangi & the Mareikura is a trio of proud Maori women combining traditional and contemporary music and dance in a visually stunning performance. With pitch perfect harmonies, their ancient spiritual roots combined with contemporary electronica R & B were delivered with political missives.”
Pip Andreas - FESTIVALS, MUSIC, NEWS BLUESFEST 2019 | DAY 1

“Mama Mihirangi & The Mareikura were an outstanding trio of fierce, fiery and friendly women from New Zealand. What a distance for this profound trio of Maori women to travel, all the way to Montreal, Canada. I was blown away (to tears at some points) with their EPIC performance, featuring soulfire, dance and siren sounds.”
Lindsay Ferguson - Roots Music Canada

“A little through Arlo Guthrie’s set we decided to go over and check out New Zealand act Mama Mihirangi and the Mereikura, and I was so glad we did. Mama Mihi is a master live looper, and seamlessly blends contemporary beats and technology with Maori instruments, language, costumes and dance. Seeing strong, passionate Mana Wahine repping Tā Moko, performing Haka and skilful Tītī Tōrea on an international stage made my eyes well up in another moment of pride.”
by Kendall Elise - 13th Floor NZ - Bluesfest AU Review

“We start the day with Māmā Mihirangi & The Māreikura, the all-female Māori world-roots production trio. It’s a powerful set so early in the day, Māmā Mihi’s voice especially so. Between filming a video of the audience saying hello to her daughter and the unfurling of a 'Stop Adani' banner, we leave feeling re-energised by the looping magic.”
by Lauren Baxter & Nicolas Huntington - Bluesfest AU Review - The Music Australia

“I was personally overcome by an incomprehensible powerful force emanating from these three Māori women… Their mesmerising fractal flow and otherworldly theatrics invoked a rapturous level of being that only the purest music is able to conjure.  ”
Roots Music Canada

“I left feeling more womanly and confident in response to their expression of ancient power”
Americana Highways

“A female trio whose show was fierce and thrilling… a sonic cyclone of song and dance”
The Transcript Oklahoma

“Mihirangi's Album "Somebody Shake The Tree" - A beat driven tapestry of pure vocal and lyrical percussion… heavy gritty bass lines to sweet symphonic harmonies, Mihirangi’s music will inspire you with her universal messages of love, beauty and empowerment.”
Falen Tuuga Stevenson - Spasifik Mag Album Review

"She's just brilliant with a capital 'B'! In the 30 years I've toured the world I've never seen anything like her… she belongs on stage." - Ali Campbell UB40.
Ali Campbell - UB40

“Right here, right now we are discovering a massive star…. it's one of the best things I've ever seen hands down… just mind blowing... there’s some kind of transformative shifting thing going on... she's a New Zealand version of Bjork.”
Jason Kerrison - OpShop

“Unbelievable… unique, hot, sexy… clearly a star… we’ve seen other things before but we have not seen something like this! You see this whole thing form from the beginning to the end… just mesmerizing.”
Rachel Hunter - Super Model

“The world is full of musical prodigies, but Mihirangi’s got them all beat… between her appetite for musical adventure, her Maori roots, and her political convictions, she's the perfect model of a 21st-century shaman and, very possibly, a future star (Front Cover & Editorial)”
The Georgia Straight - Vancouver

“Mihirangi has got locked down a whole new way of doing music… it’s going to revolutionize us as artists and I’m supporting it because I think it’s awesome”
