Biography:

Brother Spellbinder play well-crafted songs with old world ache and modern angst. Sometimes described as Cabaret Folk-rock, they veer off the beaten track with plaintiff vocals, unusual arrangements, and a variety of textures. As the daughter of a well-known drummer in the SF rock scene, Alzara learned early that music could move mountains. She works as a therapist/social worker in public health with low income SF residents and has a deep interest in how people evolve through hardship and how they heal from loss. She formed Brother Spellbinder with roots guitarist and local fisherman Jamie Wilson in 2012, an early graduate from San Francisco's School of the Arts High School. Steve La Porta adds rhythm and percussion off the beaten track and has played with Chuck Brown and Alan Hall. Rotating strings include vibrant, haunting tones on cello by Rice Masters graduate Gabriel Beistline and whimsical fills and textures on mandolin and fiddle by Steve Bollhoefer. Other rotating spellbinders include flute player Dale Carlson and harpist Eri Messer.

"Raw plaintive lamentations. Her soul the strummer, Her heart the drummer. Now the Lady, now the Vamp. Preying on Men, praying for man. The Moon Goddess giveth, the Melancholy Mistress taketh away. Let there be light." ~ Beau Lebette

Alzara often performs in New York and the band is planning to tour soon.

Press:

“In We Were Children Yesterday, Brother Spellbinder issue a record as aesthetically menacing as it is melodically captivating, and that’s something most any modern listener can get excited about.”
Garth Thomas - Hollywood Digest

“You can tell that Brother Spellbinder are putting a lot of heart into every angle of this music, because scarcely is there a moment in We Were Children Yesterday where their sound comes across as anything but intimately haunting. We Were Children Yesterday doesn’t rely on the standard formulas heard in most any indie folk records to debut in the late 2010s, but instead looks ahead with a bold conceptualism that I can’t wait to hear more of, and once you’ve checked it out for yourself, I think you’ll feel the same.”
Anne Hollster - Indie Source

“San Francisco indie folk band Brother Spellbinder blends in vintage swing, Americana, hot club, classical and world music to their folk sound to combine an old world ache with a modern twist.”
Stitched Sound - Stitched

“Their infectious new EP "We Were Once Children Yesterday," is a breath of much-needed fresh air as their sound floats over a scenic landscape from stat to finish. The band's uniqueness is filled with cellos, violins, ukuleles, guitars and an array of rhythmic instruments that drives their sound home.”
Carrie Lowell - Kurrent Music

"The overall sound of Follow Me feels influenced by The Velvet Underground and Joni Mitchell. There is such a vibrant sound crafted here by Brother Spellbinder that single-handedly refreshes earlier genres and musical styles."
James McQuiston - NeuFutur

"The unearthly combination of lead singer ALZARA GETZ's ethereal serenading and BROTHER SPELLBINDERS' acoustic charged folk-jazz approach is an alluring one. GETZ's musical tales of love, life and people in oh-so delicate stages and predicaments truly shine on the band's debut EP WHEN THE EARTH WAS STILL FLAT."
Brian Lush - Rockwired Magazine

“Possessing great warmth these songs feel timeless with their gentle spirits. A playful, twee quality permeates the pieces as they evolve in an organic, airy way. Soothing and infinitely stylish, Brother Spellbinder’s “When The Earth Was Still Flat” is a true diamond, bringing together folk, pop, and a hint of the theatrical into a magical experience.”
beachsloth.com - Skope Magazine

“The video for "Speed of Sound" is one of the best examples I've seen of the marriage of curated footage and original song. The footage is artfully and masterfully synchronized with the musical motifs and clever lyrics. Alzara & Brother Spellbinder have a Bohemian Folk sound that's both unique and familiar. Here are my two favorite stand-out moments in their lyrics: "Every lover leaves a gaping hole." and "There's a human underneath each shell." This video was recently selected for annual curated performing artist showcase in tribute to Day of the Dead at SOMarts gallery.”
Bree Noble - Women of Substance Radio

“Winner - Best performance - West Coast Songwriters, April, 2014 & March 2015.”
West Coast Songwriters

“Alzara Getz serves as the visionary behind this amazing project which includes writing those soothing melodies and catchy lyrics. Jamie Wilson serves as the right-hand man of the project which he adds his roots music influences to this group's terrific sound. This combination creates the magic behind Spellbinder's sound fueling the Bro flow. Brother Spellbinder also adds to its cast to include a few rotating members, which include Dale Carlson, a multi-talented saxophonist/flutist/harmonica player and Cal Keaoola, a Grammy Nominated Violinist. We wanted to learn more about this project so our publication invited them for a special one of one spotlight. Here is what formulated from that fantastic online meeting.”
