Perry Lowe is a writer, artist, producer and drummer from Bastrop, Texas. Perry began his journey in music when his Grandmother’s “Bridge Café” closed when he was 6. Perry and his three brothers inherited a large collection of 45’s from the jukebox which ranged in artists from Andrea True Connection to ZZ Hill. From this experience Perry learned to appreciate different genres of music and is often quoted as saying “There are only two types of music to me…good and bad.”
Mainly influenced by musical groups The Time and Heatwave, at 13 he and his brother Preston and a few friends from high school formed a band called “Image” for a local talent show. They performed to an enthusiastic crowd and after that he was bit by the bug. As a singer in the group Perry always fashioned himself in the smooth style of his influences Babyface, Kashif, Alexander O’Neal and Howard Hewitt.
Perry wanted to branch out musically, so he began to teach himself to play the drums with the aid of an old kitchen chair and live concert videos of Phil Collins. The following year Perry honed his skills to earn some summer money playing drums for local Rockabilly artist Doak Snead.
From that he was given access to a local studio in downtown Bastrop, in which the desire to become a writer, producer and engineer was fostered. As time moved on, sampling production and looping became more prevalent. Perry dove in to that style and co-produced his first track “Something To Dance To” that received spins on local radio station B-93 in Austin.
Perry went on later to perform, write and produce in California with Brown Eyed Soul (A three man R&B vocal harmony group who shared the stage with the likes of Shai, Men At Large and Domino). Perry also was a member the Tyrone Vaughan Band and produced and arranged a demo track “If You Know the Truth” that was later release by his father Jimmie Vaughan as the track “Without You” on his Grammy winning Blues album Do You Get The Blues.
Most recently Perry has been a mainstay with the Chubby Knuckle Choir as performer, drummer, writer, producer and mixing/mastering engineer. Still proclaiming that there are only two kinds of music…good and bad, Perry tends to stay away from the norm or the “box” if you will in his writing and style. He feels music of any kind, expressed properly has something to offer to everyone.
