“‘We're trying to stay on the go and not sit in one place too long," says Dillon Wray of the band Old North State. Mission accomplished. By the time he and his brother, banjoist Jantzen, come home to play tonight's concert at Southern Appalachian Brewery in Hendersonville, they will have done about 115 shows this year. "I wanted something more honest, more heartfelt onstage than electric guitars and distortion. It's a lot to hide behind in a band like that. I feel like now I'm a better musician, because any mistake that I make is heard loud and clear," he says, laughing. "The common thread in the songs is struggle, which would be our interpretation of a music career. Being on the road, losing touch with friends, learning how to make it work, staying positive when things aren't that positive, your tolerance for adversity. This last year, we've done over a hundred shows, so it's changed our outlook a little."”

“At the tail end of the group’s fall tour promoting its debut full-length album, Long Road Home, Old North State’s rigorous travel schedule reflects the hard work and dedication they put into their musical ambitions—and exemplifies the honest, everyman quality of their sound. The band consists of Dillon (vocals, guitar) and younger brother Jantzen (banjo, vocals), both natives of Asheville, N.C., who bring a certain Southern flair to their music—the band’s namesake is actually in reference to North Carolina’s official state song. It’s easy to draw comparisons to other contemporary “newgrass” efforts like Mumford and Sons, but to paint a more accurate picture you also have to include a sprinkle of Elvis Costello acoustacism, a dash of a twang-tinged Panic at the Disco and a harmony-laden, pop sensibility that makes the resulting product patently unique. ”
