“A Way With Words -IT’S unfortunate the emotion that is most palpable in many good songs is the result of pain, but love’s loss – for many of the songs here are break-up songs – is listeners’ gain. Chapman, as a promoter and radio deejay, displays a love for the blues, but these songs will speak more to country music fans, who’ll appreciate the story-telling lyrics and the superb musicianship. In the latter category, Chapman has made the most of her impressive contacts list, drafting in guest artists Dan Patlansky, Karen Zoid, Emile Swiegers, Albert Frost and others to join producer Kevin Liecher and her excellent backing band. Shaken combines all of these elements in a package that appears to be simple (courtesy of its “Yeah, yeah, yeah” refrain), but which introduces both Chapman’s way with words and how complex but tasteful embellishments can add to songs. Devil At The Crossroads and Brother are quieter but as powerful. This is a consistent, strong collection.”

“Singer delivers a set that's more "Memphis" than "Joburg" Real Music Wednesdays: Natalie Chapman Karabo Mooki Natalie Chapman gave the Puma Real Music Wednesday audience something different to the usual singer/songwriter fare that she's often associated with. Chapman was joined by her guitarist to deliver, by her own account, a set that was more "Memphis" than "Joburg". Easily putting everyone at ease with her music and lighthearted chat, her ability to tell stories through her songs - in a way that gives the audience a particularly intimate experience, -was on fine display at the Bioscope. Talking about the songwriting process, Chapman explained how a song can completely change while being written and also gave insight into how her songs mirror life's changes. Chapman ended the set with an exquisite country rendition of "Rolling In The Deep" which sent the crowd home in an upbeat mood. Her next album – "still untitled," she says - will be out at the end of September.”
