Jazz at the Rat featuring The Bridge Trio Date: Thursday, April 23, 2015 Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Building: Lavin-Bernick Center (LBC), City Diner/Der Rathskeller Location: uptown campus The Bridge Trio, consisting of drummer Joe Dyson, bassist Max Moran, and pianist Conun Pappas, has its roots deeply entrenched in the New Orleans jazz tradition. The young musicians first came together while students at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA), under the direction of their mentor and former teacher, legendary clarinetist Alvin Batiste. Today, when not performing as the Bridge Trio, they are members of saxophone master Donald Harrison’s band, and are composers of innovative compositions in the "Nouveau Swing" style, a style of jazz created by Harrison that merges modern dance music with Afro-New Orleans traditional music. Jazz at the Rat is a series of live concerts held on selected Thursday evenings at Der Rathskeller (a.k.a. "The Rat") at Tulane. Curated by Jesse McBride, the series features performances by jazz legends and rising stars, comprising of both visiting artists and outstanding New Orleans-based musicians, accompanied by students and faculty from Tulane's Jazz Studies program. DIRECT FROM NEW ORLEANS A new generation of musicians continues the trajectory of New Orleans jazz. Tradition meets the progressive with The Bridge Trio, the hottest new band from the birthplace of jazz. Pianist Conun Pappas, bassist Max Moran and drummer Joe Dyson came together as a group at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) under the direction of their mentor and former teacher, the legendary clarinetist and jazz educator Alvin Batiste. The teenaged trio came to the attention of New Orleans jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison, who took them under his wing - and incorporated them into his ensemble when they were just out of high school. The three young virtuosos toured extensively with Harrison, honing their skills in traditional music while being trained in bebop and Harrison's own form of progressive jazz, Nouveau Swing. They have put these lessons to good use, creating their own compositions and unique sound. Since striking out on their own three years ago, the trio has recorded two critically-acclaimed albums, and performed with some of the most notable jazz artists on the scene - from Dr Lonnie Smith to Don Byron. “These three musicians are deeply connected to the roots of New Orleans music while…never shying away from taking the music in new directions… the focus is on making music as an ensemble, gracefully weaving textures over ever-changing dynamics that displays a musical maturity far beyond the band’s years.” - Offbeat Magazine
