Merging calm, funky soul, rock, and a strong hip-hop aesthetic, singer-songwriter Chris Mathien (MAY-thee-in), or simply put as just "Mathien", conveys the passion of reggae and soul vocal stylings, the free experimentation of Parliament-Funkadelic Rock, while incorporating the unconventional hip-hop attitudes of A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots. His voice encompasses beyond-his-years soulfulness, and possesses an undeniably unique vocal style that catapults him from mediocrity. His distinctive lyrical approach maintains a strong sense of wit and unique ability to cleverly tell a story, while his talents as a producer highlight the landscapes of his music. By the time Mathien turned 21, he released his first full-length recording Head, Heart, & Hands and toured the Midwest college circuit playing hundreds of gigs at a variety of venues.

Born into a non-musical but supportive family, Chris had his first piano lesson at the age of five, and began playing the guitar while still in elementary school. Playing with various rock bands through the end of high school, Chris gained popularity, but eventually decided to focus energies on his own songwriting and solo work. After acceptance into the vocal performance program at Southern Illinois University, he sought out players to back up his solo work. By junior year, he had constructed a 6 piece back-up band to support him throughout his college tours. By the end of 2005, the band "Mathien" had played virtually every college campus in the southern Illinois area, and received sold out shows at nearly every performance. Chris recalls, "I just remember calling my friends because I didn't see them at my show, and they were like, 'we tried but we couldn't get in!'"

In 2007, "Mathien" released his first full-length CD, Head, Heart, & Hands, a journey through the inner workings of his eclectic and obscure palette of influences.  The album establishes Chris as a prolific songwriter, and a multi-instrumentalist and passionate producer.  In December 2008, he signed with a Chicago based management company, Luke Jensen and Company.  Soon after that he was introduced and signed with an independent record company, Midwest Music Group, and began recording a new album out of one of Chicago’s newest and the worlds finest recording facilities, Pressure Point Recording Studios.

On Friday, June 5th, 2009, Mathien launched their newest album at Chicago’s legendary House of Blues Main Hall stage.  Over 1000 people were in attendance, and it marked the start of some major momentum and success for the Mathien's career.  Press events, radio, tv, & tours are being worked on, and there’s no telling to what will happen for this amazingly talented singer and songwriter, who simply wants to create and share his music and lyrics with the world…
