Connect with Close Encounters with Music Close Encounters with Music is an enriching concert experience that brings together sublime chamber music, distinguished performers and insightful commentary. Putting the composers and their times in perspective, cellist and Artistic Director Yehuda Hanani introduces the program from the stage. Trade Winds: From China with Love explores the musical dialogue between East and West, with soloist "Queen of Pipa" Liu Fang performing traditional selections on the Chinese counterpart to the lute. She is joined by Yehuda Hanani for a premiere by Pulitzer Prize winner Zhou Long. Bulgarian pianist Emma Tahmizian plays Mother Goose and Leo Ornstein’s remarkable A la Chinoise, and Israeli violinist Hagai Shaham offers Kreisler’s Tambourin Chinois and Joseph Achron’s haunting Hebrew Melody. The program concludes with Ravel’s groundbreaking pentatonic-inflected Piano Trio. Brimming with ardor and ecstacy, it’s like a Picasso painting in music — the modern that returns to primitive. Q: I have always been interested in your cross-cultural collaborations. Would you be interested in collaborating with an incredibly gifted Vietnamese tyba player? Thank you Liu Laoshi!
A: Thank you for your interest. Vietnamese Tyba as well as Dan Tranh have kept mostly the authentic traditional way of playing which is fantastic. I am always interested in, and open to inter-cultural collaborations. Yes, I am very interested in the Vietnamese Tyba. It is just a matter of time to find the ideal occasion and the right opportunity.
