About

03/30/2009
The Service Industry whip through lower Midwest
Austin's Bolshevik Psychedelia sweethearts the Service Industry whip through Tornado Alley this week in a series of 4 dates.

The band has a tune ("Bookstores & Restaurants") in Rob Thomas' revived "Cupid" series on ABC later this Spring, (Episode 5 "Left Of The Dial") and reportedly even gets a shout-out in the script. The pilot airs Tuesday at 9pm on ABC.

Robert Christgau has once again named the band in his MSN Consumer Guide ("Keep The Babies Warm" Honorable Mention for April)..."They didn't predict the crash -- too busy."

As much as trap man Travis Garaffa appreciates the attention he quips "Yep, there we are, right there alongside our peers Seal and Kelley Clarkson.   If we could just break the habit of having, y'know, actual songs, we could go somewhere..."

The planting will hold for a day, get out and see the band.

Ram Jam IV, The 1st Annual Saustex Country &  Mexican Dance, Nervebreakers

Ram Jam IV
It's hard to believe it's that time of year again already. The Fourth Annual Ram Jam is happening Friday and Saturday April 10th & 11th at the Limelight here in San Antonio. We honor the memories of Ramiro "Ram" Ayala, Doug Morgan and the place we loved so much---Tacoland.

This year seems especially poignant as the Riverwalk expansion heads north at a rapid pace. I don't have any reliable information to back this up, but it seems like the building that housed the club might not be around this time next year. So if you happen to live in town, you might take a drive by,have a look around, crack a beverage of your choice and talk to Ram a little while... it could be one of your last opportunities.

This year's line-up:

Friday April 10th
Big Drag
Snowbyrd
Los # 3 Dinners
Texacala Jones & her T.J. Hookers
the Saturday Night Satellites
DJ- Eddie Hernandez

Saturday April 11th
The Sons of Hercules
The Flamin' Hellcats
The Infidels
Los Mescaleros
special guest + DJ-T.B.A.

Doors at 8pm, first band at 8:30 each night.
A portion of proceeds will benefit San Anto Cultural Arts.

The 1st Annual Saustex Country & Mexican Dance
I was trying to figure out a way to get some my favorite short-penised friends all together in one place and it struck me...I should host a dance... a Country & Mexican Dance. And so was born the 1st Annual Saustex Country & Mexican Dance featuring some old-school tom foolery of the highest and most impeccable order.

It's happenin' at Emo's in Austin on Saturday April 18th and will feature:
The Poor Dumb Bastards
The Hickoids
The Loco Gringos
Pinata Protest

The Hickoids have graciously agreed to loan the Gringos their backline in order that they may fill their short bus with merch. I personally will sport Byron Dean any quantity of duct tape he requires to perform. Pinata Protest will shame the old men in the other acts into bringing their game.

Stoned. Immaculate.

"Til It's Over..."

For the first time in 15 years, the Nervebreakers will perform live in Dallas, at Club Dada on Saturday, April 11th. Doors will open at 8:00 for a punk rock meet and greet happy hour kind of thing. Deejay Mr. Rid (Mark Ridlen) will be spinning tunes. The first band, Sparrowbox, will go on at 9:30, Spector 45 at 10:30 and Nervebreakers at 11:30.

For the love of Homer & Jethro...get out and see some rock & roll.

for true,

Smitty

03/06/2009

Hello again friends...

This go around is dedicated exclusively to happenings and bands of interest at this year's SXSW. Hope you enjoy and hope to see you there...

SXSW Preview

Wednesday March 18th

Kick the day off by dropping in the Combo Plate Booking Party at Guero's Taco Bar(1412 S Congress Ave.) where Saustex artist Eric Hisaw will appear along with Elizabeth McQueen, Moonlight Towers and Matt the Electrician.

Sauspop Artists The Summer Wardrobe and The Service Industry will play the Burnside Distribution Showcase at Submerged (333 E.2nd St., directly across the street from the west side of the Austin Convention Center). They'll be joined by New Zealand singer/songwriter Jackie Bristow, Seattle post-grungies Sweet Water,  Portland psych-folk sensation Blind Pilot and the Anime inspired sounds of the Slants.
The Saustex & Sauspop labels are both distributed by BDC. They're some of the most honest and hard-working folks in the business. We're happy to be associated with them and glad that they chose to include our acts on the showcase.
and later...

The Hickoids will make their first appearance at SXSW in over a decade (can you say "Hay Explosion!") as part of the Starcleaner Showcase at the Habana Bar (708 E. 6th St., between I-35 and Red River). The boys will be joined by a slightly noisier breed from around the country including the Reaction (featuring former Hickoids skin-pounder Wade Driver), Shellshag ( featuring Wade's brother John), This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb,Stupid Party, Future Virgins and Thee Headliners.

Thursday March 19th
Saustex recording artists Snowbyrd will take the stage at Trophy's( 2008 S Congress Ave) at 6pm as part of Whoopsy! Magazine's 4th Annual Extravagonzo at Texas' most euphemistically named bar.( Having siezed the title from San Antonio's "Winner's Circle" upon the latter's closing some years back.) The boys of the 'Byrd have finished mixing tracks for their new disc which will be released sometime this summer. The new set will include studio tracks recorded with recently deceased drummer Manny Castillo, as well as some "Manny Rarities".

Friday March 20th
" A Town South of  Austin Volume 2"
Saustex is pleased to be hosting a show comprised exclusively of San Antonio talent for the second year in a row at SXSW. This year's edition will take place at the Habana Bar and starts at 8pm. The concept remains to present acts that incorporate the regional music into their updated sounds. A brief rundown:

8 pm Hans Frank Glambilly -- Jerry Lee Lewis'  tour bus rear ends Love & Rockets' limo, the surgeons and mechanics do their best to fit it all back together and the result  is Glambilly.

9 pm The Krayolas featuring the West Side Horns --the current critical favorite on the ticket, receiving raves from Dave Marsh, Ben Fong Torres and others. A mainstay of "Little Steven's Garage" on Sirius/XM Radio , the Krayolas bring it and are not to be missed in a special appearance with the West Side Horns.

10 pm Mitch Webb & the Swindles -- Mitch & Co. channel Doug Sahm bringing the same eclectic verve to the stage. Mitch's last two CD's have made the top 20 in the Americana Music Assoc. charts and he always has a top-notch band.

11 pm De Los Muertos --lipstick traces of Slash Recs-era Flesheaters combined with a gothic hard rock sensibility and more than a little touch of San Anto.

12 pm Pinata Protest--in English or en Espanol, one of the purest punk bands around.

1 am Boxcar Satan--if Robert Johnson had taken a nap instead of visiting the Red Light District following his seminal SA recording session in 1936 and awoken Rip Van Winkle style 45 years later, met the Butthole Surfers backstage at the Bonham Exchange, then decided to join forces, it might have sounded something like these boys.

Owl Tree Roasting(3421 N. IH-35) will host a free party featuring Saustex artists T. Tex Edwards & Out On Parole and good guys The Transgressors, The Nervebreakers, Churchwood and more from noon until 6pm.

Saturday March 21st

My good friend Jerry Clayworth (who gets props for designing this year's poster for the Austin Music Awards, as well as the "A Town South..." poster) is hosting an in-store at Cheapo Disc (914 N. Lamar ) featuring a live appearance by the Sons of Hercules and a signing by Pacific Northwest garage legend the Sonics.

Tex Edwards & the Nervebreakers will be at Antone's Record Shop (2928 Guadalupe) along with former Flamin' Groovies mainman Cyril Jordan and his new band Magic Christian. The show runs from noon until 8pm and will be emcee'd by Beatle Bob.

I, personally, will leave town before the rest of the circus with the Hickoids  to play the Meridian in Houston that night with Martin Atkins, the Queers and a whole buncha' other folks...

I'll be at the Indie Village from noon until 1 or 2pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the trade show. Stop in and pick up some free CD's and say howdy.
'til then,

Smitty
