Old Gray Mule is bringing to Australia what he calls “that foot-stompin’, magic boogie shit,” and what blues bible Living Blues recently called “a breath of fresh air to the blues scene”. Old Gray Mule (AKA C R Humphrey) emerged recently on his local music scene in Lockhart, Texas. Left cold by modern music, he’d left his guitar in the closet for years before rediscovering the grinding rhythms of juke joint blues. When debut album Sound Like Somethin’ Fell Off The House was released last year, those seductive rhythms soon had blues fans hooked. Living Blues called it a ‘display of raw musical prowess,’ and the Boston Blues Society said, ‘the loose and salacious groove of Send Me Your Panties invokes … the same rap that made Junior Kimbrough a father to approximately 36 children’. CW Ayon has three releases of his own to his name, as well as a 2010 New Mexico Music Award for best original blues song. Old Gray Mule and CW Ayon first played together at the 2010 Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where they rocked a little juke called Club 2000 all day and night with blues legends T Model Ford, Watermelon Slim and Pat ‘Rockadaddy’ Murphy. Since then, they’ve played alongside David and Kinney Kimbrough at Junior Kimbrough’s 80th birthday party, as well as Hosea Hargrove, Orange Jefferson, Matthew Robinson and ‘Mississippi’ Gabe Carter. King Biscuit Time are proud to support Old Gray Mule and C W Ayon.
