About

Welcome to Julie Moffitt’s page. If you like Tori Amos, the Indigo Girls, Joni Mitchell, Dan Fogelberg, Elton John, and Janis Ian, then you will like me.

My music is acoustic rock with a touch of folk, a little blues, a smattering of musical theater, and a hint of melancholy. I write and cover whatever speaks to me, gets me rocking, or has a message I agree with. I tend to gravitate toward classic rock, acoustic guitar and piano-driven songwriting.

Listen and enjoy!

Influences: Tori Amos, Paula Cole, Kansas, Queen, ELP, Beatles, Indigo Girls, Stephen Sondheim, Chopin, Peter, Paul and Mary, CSNY, Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Duncan Sheik, Steeleye Span, Bonnie Raitt, Styx, ELP, Janis Ian, Rita Coolidge, James and Livingston Taylor.

Bio
I’ve been playing and singing since I can remember. I don’t remember learning to play the piano, or learning to read music. It’s like talking; I learned it so early that I never question it as a form of communication.

Guitar I picked up at eleven. People often ask me which instrument I like better. The truth is I’m a waaaaay better pianist than guitarist (still study classical piano with a Master teacher), but each instrument has it own expressive capabilities, and I just go where the mood takes me. I couldn’t give up either one.

I’ve been performing professionally since I was a teen. Over the years I’ve done a bunch of different kinds of gigs, partly because I play a bunch of different kinds of music. Coffeehouses, concerts, festivals, bars, weddings, musical theater. I’ve played rock, folk, classical, and “lounge” piano music, as a solo and in bands. It’s great fun! I think if I played the same kind of music or venue every week I would get bored. This way it’s always different, and it keeps me challenged. I can’t imagine being the Stones, and playing the same songs every night for forty years. Of course, maybe if I got paid as much as the Stones it wouldn’t seem so bad!

Right now I’m focusing on the performing and writing of my original music, as well as my other writing (Poetry and non-fiction: see my website at www.juliemoffitt.com), and I teach private piano, guitar, and voice lessons, as well as music classes at Harrisburg Area Community College. It’s a lot of work, and I never “come home from work,” since my work is my life, but it’s a great life - being able to express myself for a living.

Thanks for stopping by.
