CALIFORNIA666, JOY, SHIVA TRASH & HARSH TOKE $5 DOORS: 8 PM / SHOW: 9 PM CALIFORNIA666: California 666 includes Ake (pronounced Ah – key) Arndt, who lives in Ocean Beach, and Josh Bohannon, who sometimes lives on a boat (he sails an 80 foot wood yacht for a living) or in a Point Loma studio apartment. Arndt also designs skateboard graphics, and together the duo also have a project called Operation MINDBLOW, which performs liquid light shows made famous at psychedelic events of the late 1960s and the early 1970s. JOY is the newest, loudest tune meltin’ power-trio-trip band to come screaming outta Southern California. Since their formation in 2010 Zachary Oakley (Vocals, Guitar), Trevor Mast (Bass) and Taylor Charter (Drums) have dialed in a spaced-out-sonic-groove-ride all their own. Their live shows conjure musical spirits of the past in the form of improv-jams and unapologetic volumes and wild stage energy. For fans of Blue Cheer, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, acid and freestyle-Psych take note. SHIVA TRASH: When the Sess split up in late 2008, members went on to form Beaters, Ale Mania, and Shiva Trash. Mark Rivera (guitar/vox) of the Sess joined his girlfriend Lisa Phelps (guitar/vox) of Xerox, Branden Parish aka Atoms bassist Brand-O (Casio keys), and drummer J.J. Jimenez to form Shiva Trash. The group played their first show in November 2010 at the Tin Can Ale House. Many of the shows have been with ’77-style punk band the Last Years, with which they share a practice space in Mira Mesa. “Most of us are bass players,” Phelps says, “and now we’re in a band without a bass.” With keys and guitars (one clean, one with Big Muff distortion) filling out the bottom end, Shiva Trash carries the garage-punk energy of the Sess and Atoms to a more psychedelic, shadowy place, which Jimenez calls “dark surf slash punk slash weird.” Think the Velvet Underground, Wharton Tiers, Thee Oh Sees, and early Stereolab. Lyrics tend to revolve around occult themes inspired by ideas from sources such as the film Holy Mountain and author Aleister Crowley. “It’s imagery,” says Rivera, “and ideas like the union of opposites. It’s about throwing yourself in the coals and molding yourself into what you want.” Jimenez has an illuminati stick-and-poke tattoo on his forearm, which mirrors the triangle and eye pin on Phelps’s jacket. The band has a repertoire of about seven songs, two of which have been recorded by Pandemonium Recorders and are available to stream on reverbnation.com. They have been known to play at Dragon Rojo in Tijuana. “J.J. and Branden were terrified the last time we went to TJ, like, they were going to be shot on sight,” Rivera laughs. “But, it’d be cool if more people went down there. It’s super relaxed.” HARSH TOKE: New fuzzed out Psychedelic project from Gabe of Drowning Men. Like a destructive wind bursting and shredding these six strings of space release some 5,000 notes circleing and oscillating around timelessly and unremittingly in and out of the beating heart and core groove of the drums, the banging the bashing allows the bass to seem far out as a cosmic buffet of pounding and pummeling and punishing and as if underneath the ocean came an atmospheric astral plane of sounds infinite and fuzzed down to the bone do these keyboard ivories tickle as if lost in space. But out with the bull and in with the real, these 4 music lovers and jam crazed heavy seekers search to get that sound aloud and and make a ton of fucking noise…
