Jeff Tuohy is the kind of guy who will talk to anyone in a bar. From that old man glued to his seat alone in the corner to the young female bartender who blushes when he cracks a smile, Tuohy's just good at relating to people. And it's that same warm, unrestrained sincerity and daring that comes through in his songwriting and live performance. A seasoned actor and front man, he emerges as a devout crowd pleaser. With beads of sweat on his face and an earnest longing in his eyes, Jeff Tuohy gives it his all each time – sharing life's ups and downs through compelling, upbeat sets.
It's raw, a bit gritty, and it's the passion missing from so many singer-songwriters today – a performance style that lovers of live music truly appreciate.
With the emotional honesty of Jason Mraz or John Mayer, Jeff Tuohy's music shines through his own blend of heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics put to driving, passionate guitar and a hard-hitting rhythm section. Reminiscent of mid-90s radio popular rock, but with a fresh, contemporary perspective that incorporates jazz, folk and other genres, Tuohy's catchy and memorable blend of pop/rock refreshingly manages to evade perfect categorization.
The former leader of college rock outfit 28 and Waiting, Jeff got his taste of the rock ‘n' roll life opening for acts from Howie Day to Rob Base and EZ Rock. In late 2004, Tuohy made the decision to embark on the solo project that he would take all the way.
“I was going through a tough time in my life and felt this urge to create. I called up Aaron Katz and asked him to produce the album,” said Jeff. “I had nothing to lose. Next thing I knew I was recording songs dating back to my junior year of high school. Turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.”
During December 2004 through June 2005 Tuohy recorded his debut album Breaking Down The Silence at Thundering Sky Studios in South Berwick, ME and Waterway Studios in Dover, NH with Katz as producer (Percy Hill), Brian Takiff on bass, and Dave DiCenso (Duran Duran) on drums.
Self-released in the spring of 2006, the album rapidly gained air-play at 100+ triple A and college radio stations nationwide, received praise from the people at iTunes and Awarestore, and made its way into indie record stores across the country. Breaking Down The Silence met positive reviews from national media such as Glide, Amplifier, and Relix, and in April 2006, Relix Magazine featured the track “Silence of the Spirit” on its monthly sampler. A Taste of Triple A followed with “Knock on Wood” on the May 2006 sampler, and “Brandy” on the June and July samplers (Tuohy was the cover artist that June.)
Both an album of love and loss, of insecurity and taking control, Breaking Down The Silence emerges as a candid journey through our common life experiences. It's warm, pop versatility on growing as a person and moving forward.
Featuring eleven diverse and passionate tracks, Breaking Down begins with the ringing guitar and catchy lovesick chorus of “Unaware,” and moves into the mellowed, soul-searching tracks, “Doctor Thomas” and “Knock On Wood”; the assertive and vengeful, “Rob the Bank”; the lush and tender love ballad, “Serenade”; robust classic rock with jazzy sax, “Fields of Grey”; a classy and spare appreciation of a lover featuring gospel-style keyboard, “Lindsey's Song”; two songs on living apathetically, “Silence of the Spirit” and “A Wishing Well”; a driven, fed up goodbye, “Brandy”; and finally a minimal and thoughtful adaptation of a 1960 Robert Duncan poem, “Often I am Permitted to Return to a Meadow.”
Early 2007 saw Jeff Tuohy hit the road for his first full-fledged national tour. Over six weeks in January and February, Tuohy and his band played for audiences in 32 cities – each chronicled in a weekly road blog that Amplifier invited him to write for its website.
Tuohy is currently working on his sophomore release, which is expected for early 2008. With a summer of regional touring and another extended national tour in the fall, the man is staying busy broadening his fan base one show, review and radio station at a time.
