This band is absolutely Blowin Up across the nation these days. With a brand new CD RELEASE, Honey Island Swamp Band is returning to San Francisco for this one night only Direct from NEW ORLEANS to the venue that was their birth place as a band (as they formed here as refugees after Katrina) The Boom Boom Room! $18 (adv) www.boomboomtickets.comMORE about *HONEY ISLAND SWAMP BAND* Great music begins with great songs, and great songs are what the Honey Island Swamp Band is all about. The band came together after Aaron Wilkinson (acoustic guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Chris Mule(electric guitar, vocals) were marooned in San Francisco after the levee breaches following Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and had a chance encounter with fellow New Orleans evacuees Sam Price (bass, vocals) and Garland Paul (drums, vocals) at San Franciscos Boom Boom Room. Theyd all worked together in New Orleans bands for years, but with no prospects of getting home any time soon, they figured theyd better cook up something new, and quick! A few days later they had put together a song list, landed a recurring weekly gig at the Boom Boom Room courtesy of club owner Alex Andreas, and settled in to share a little taste of Southern culture with their new West coast neighbors. Their 7-song eponymous debut was recorded in 2006 at famed studio The Plant in Sausalito, CA, after sound engineer Robert Gatley saw HISB live at one of the weekly gigs and offered the band an opportunity to record at the studio. The tunes and talent were just pouring out of these guys, Gatley says. Id been missing that funky bayou sound and Honey Island had the club jumping. I couldnt wait to get them on tape. The resulting EP was received so well that all the musicians decided to continue the band upon moving back to New Orleans in early 2007. Honey Island Swamp Bands sound has been described as Americana on the Bayou, with timeless songs from Wilkinson and Mule, highlighted by Mules searing guitar, Wilkinsons sure-handed mandolin, and 4-part vocal harmonies, all anchored by the powerful groove of Price & Pauls Louisiana stomp rhythm section. Their music draws from a variety of influences in the world of roots music, including artists such as Lowell George & Little Feat, Jimmy Reed, Taj Mahal, Earl King, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and New Orleans own Night Tripper, the legendary Dr. John, placing the band perfectly among Louisiana contemporaries such as Anders Osborne, Tab Benoit, and Eric Lindell (with whom Mule and Wilkinson toured for several years). In April 2009, the band released its first full-length album Wishing Well produced by Tom Drummond of Better Than Ezra. Throughout the rest of 2009, the band toured relentlessly in support of Wishing Well, on the strength of such songs as Natural Born Fool, Till the Moneys Gone, and the albums title track. In January 2010, Wishing Well was named 2009s Best Blues Album at OffBeat Magazines BEST OF THE BEAT Awards, where the band was also honored as Best Emerging Artist. Cane Sugar is a collection of rockin tunes from Honey Island Swamp Band that showcase the bands superb musicianship (note the grooves locked down by drummer Garland Paul and bassist Sam Price) in addition to what is this rapidly rising roots-rock acts defining characteristic: the simpatico duality of contrasting worldviews offered by two top-notch songwriters. Weaving writing styles both sweetly poetic (Wilkinsons Prodigal Son) and defiantly depraved (Never Saw It Coming from Mul) not to mention the formers fine mandolin picking and the latters sinister shreds on Cane Sugar, its easy to discover why HISB seems poised to fulfill its substantial potential. Hittin The Note Magazine Good rock n roll. You dont realize how you miss it until it hits you full in the face like it does when you put Cane Sugar on whatever form of music player you utilizea good time attitude (whether optimistic or defiant) and the way that the band members work off each other distinguishes Cane Sugar from other roots and Southern influenced records. In and of itself, its great collection of rockin songs. Offbeat Magazine Born into the grit of Southern comfort and bred by a homegrown dose of good livin, Honey Island Swamp Bands album, Cane Sugar, captures the soul of the dynamic roots rock group as they venture over yet another crossroads in their expanding career. Collaborating with Grammy award-winning producer John Porter, the members of the Honey Island Swamp Band were able to use such a creative element to hone in on a pure, whole sound that utilized instrumentation that carved perfectly into the songwriting pairing of Chris Mule and Aaron Wilkinson. Elevated by the musicianship and craftsmanship of the rest of the talented group, the harmonies balance perfectly along the attractive melodies and sweeping rhythms throughout the album home-inspired music that resonates Southern roots with a Big Easy attitude. Where YAt Magazine Its hard to hear the Honey Island Swamp Band play without bobbing your head or at least tapping your toes. Maybe its the searing guitar from Chris Mul, the mandolin plucking from Aaron Wilkinson, Trevor Brooks Hammond B-3 organ, the thoughtful lyrics and four-part harmonies, or the groovin stomp rhythm section from bassist Sam Price and drummer Garland Paul. Whatever it is, the sounds are quintessentially swampy.
