“ A scientist leading the search has admitted there may be up to five such particles. The particle is said to explain a fundamental problem in physics: how matter gets its mass. It is one of the prime targets of Cern, the multi-billion-dollar particle physics laboratory near Geneva. After smashing 640 trillion protons together, the Large Hadron Collider, Cern's giant particle accelerator, has generated 80-100 possible Higgs bosons. But the number of candidates is slightly more than predicted. "One possible reason is that there is more than one Higgs," said Mr Heuer. "And if there is more than one, then theory suggests there could be up to five." This hypothesis is known as "super-symmetry", and predicts that each known sub-atomic particle could be partnered by another "super-particle", although these remain undetected. Mr Heuer remains confident that Cern scientists will soon confirm at least one Higgs.”

The hunt for the Higgs boson thickens as U.S. scientists find further evidence of the mass-imparting particle that closely matches experiments from the Large Hadron Collider. Researchers released an analysis of 10 years worth of data from the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, which provide more hints of the Higgs boson, but not a conclusive finding. The data, presented at a physics conference in Italy, indicate that the particle could exist at a mass of between 115 gigaelectronvolts and 135 gigaelectronvolts. Experiments at the Tevatron particle collider in Illinois are not statistically significant enough to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson where scientists theorize it is. But the data analysis did exclude some mass ranges and gives scientists more confidence they are closing in on the famously elusive Higgs boson.”
