Hannabiell & Midnight Blue is often called a melodic rhythm ensemble with a mixture of African drumming, reggae, jazz and funk music that will make you dance all night. Hannabiell Sanders (Percussion, Bass Trombone, mbira, and voice), and Yilis del C. Suriel (Percussion and mbira) manage and promote the band and when they perform together as a duet they are called the Ladies of Midnight Blue.

“Their victory at this year’s Schmazz Factor competition prompted a few listeners to question whether Midnight Blue is really a jazz band, and it’s true that jazz is just one element in a rich mix that also embraces reggae, funk, soul, and much else. What is not in question is the infectious enthusiasm of the group’s approach, with Hannabiell Sanders out front giving a thorough working over to the bass trombone (likely to be particularly exciting in the intimate environment of the Bridge’s upstairs room).
This is actually a UK version of a band which Hannabiell originally formed back in 2003 in her native USA. New Jersey’s loss is indisputably Tyneside’s gain, and this is a fine uplifting way to end the week.
