Bio

"Watch for them, and you might be saying 'I saw them long before they were so famous.'"
Tracy Kolenchuck, Edmonton Arts Photographer.

You could possibly label Drowning Ophelia as “alternative pop;” however, their music combines influences from classic rock to Latin sounds and their new self titled album has been described as “Santana meets No Doubt.”

Founded by twin sisters, Candace and Karli Schiebelbein, Drowning Ophelia has been featured as one of Big Rock's "Untapped" up and coming artists sharing the stage with Tupelo Honey's Matthew Landry. Drowning Ophelia was also chosen by Hevy D Music as a showcased "Star of Tommorow". You can find their single "Cinderella" available for free download in bags of Hevy D Kettle Korn.

Released in Fall 2008, "Cinderella" has won awards for “Best Female Vocals” and “Most Original” in Alternative Pop on Garageband.com. Listeners describe “Cinderella” as “zany, quirky, full of fun and latino sounds” with an “uplifting hook, snapping samba-like beat with cutting edge energy behind the song”.

In 2007, Drowning Ophelia won Supernova.com's Battle of the Bands which propelled them onto Edmonton's alternative music scene.

Candace and Karli grew up in small town Saskatchewan surrounded by music. With professional musicians for parents and a recording studio for a playroom, these girls harmonized before talking, read music before storybooks, and performed live music before getting braces.

In 2003, Candace and Karli moved to Edmonton, Alberta, where went to school by day– Candace at the University of Alberta, and Karli at Grant MacEwan College where she received a Diploma in Music- and wrote songs by night.

Drowning Ophelia has played in venues across Edmonton and is taking their show on the road to the rest of Alberta and Western Canada in Spring 2009.

NEW SOUNDS: DROWNING OPHELIA
Vue Weekly: Edmonton's 100% Independent News & Entertainment Weekly

By: Maria Kotovych

Who doesn’t like a set of twins? No, I didn’t mean it like that. Stop it! I’m talking about twin sisters recording an album together, which is what we have here with Drowning Ophelia. Edmonton residents Candace and Karli Schiebelbein present a pop album with an alternative twist, beginning with “Cinderella,” whose quirky lyrics and Latin beats open the album and promise listeners good things to come. The album does a great job of balancing slower ballads such as “Watch Me Drown” with energetic tunes like “Road to Nowhere,” which races along like ska on speed. And what a fun song! I’m not surprised that this group mentions No Doubt as one of its influences. Vocally, the sisters express themselves most powerfully when they lead with a strong, stirring alto. “Hush Now,” for instance, depicts the twins’ vocal confidence and lyrical maturity. At other times, the ladies switch gears, allowing their voices to explore a more folksy, Jewel-like sound. I’ve heard too many albums where all the songs sound so much alike that I could never tell them apart; fortunately, that’s not the case here.
