"Dan Bryk’s fun, bouncy and upbeat new CD, Discount Store, showcases his talent in writing catchy, memorable lyrics that will have listeners remembering songs and singing them to themselves as they would commercial jingles."

It's almost here... Bryk's third album Pop Psychology.

Dan Bryk Biography:

Dan Bryk is an "indie-rock" singer slash songwriter originally from Toronto, Canada, and currently based in Raleigh, NC.

Bryk's previous CD Lovers Leap (on NYC's Scratchie Records) earned wide critical acclaim and a steadily growing audience for its classic pop stylings and literate, frequently confessional lyrics.

Lovers Leap, out of print the past three years following New Line's acquisition of Scratchie, has developed a devoted cult following thanks to filesharing and post-facto raves from places like Pitchfork (whose Brian Howe opines "Bryk has three assets that help his classic piano-man style find purchase in this cynical age: A fatally gorgeous and tactfully deployed falsetto, a minutely specific worldview, and a dash of lo-fi indie rockery to deflate accusations of retrofetish... a sparkling pop palimpsest."). Recorded with a talented cast of Toronto luminaries (including Kurt Swinghammer, Danny Michel, Howie Beck, Chris Warren, Kyp Harness and featuring members of the Supers, Jacksoul, Sarah Harmer's and Sarah McLachlan's bands) and mixed by Jim Rondinelli (Sloan, Matthew Sweet, Wilco) Lovers Leap packs a surprising punch for an "indie rock" album.

Recorded with a talented cast of Toronto luminaries (including Kurt Swinghammer, Danny Michel, Howie Beck, Chris Warren, Kyp Harness and featuring members of the Supers, Jacksoul, Sarah Harmer's and Sarah McLachlan's bands) and mixed by Jim Rondinelli (Sloan, Matthew Sweet, Wilco) Lovers Leap packs a surprising punch for an "indie rock" album and will be re-released with new bonus tracks by Urban Myth alongside Pop Psychology. Until then, Lovers Leap can be purchased from Dan's webshop, MapleMusic and CDBaby.

In the fall of 2006, Urban Myth quietly released "Dan Bryk Christmas Album", a "fan club" mini-album of holiday-themed songs that garnered stellar reviews not only from blogs and websites like Pitchfork, Suite101 and MoteMgzn but also the Toronto Star and the Independent.

(Un-)apologetically Canadian, Bryk has nonetheless toured throughout the US solo and within varying bands, and toured Japan with Stephen Malkmus for Lovers Leap's release there. Bryk has shared stages with many great alt-pop singer-songwriters like Fountains of Wayne, Ron Sexsmith, Teddy Thompson, Jason Collett, Lee Feldman, Sarah Slean, Chris Mills, Django Haskins, Eleni Mandell, Noam Weinstein, Amy Correia, Steve Wynn and Hayden.

Dan presently resides in his adoptive home of Raleigh, NC, working on a number of follow-ups: a discursive "concept" album titled "Pop Psychology" to be released later this year; "Forget You", an EP preview of the as yet-untitled "next album" of giddy, confessional pop confections; and "If I Were You", a lovingly recorded, solo (literally!) acoustic/electronic album of obscure covers he has been gently overdubbing for a few years now.

Dan also plays and records with Chapel Hill-based pop groups Down By Avalon and the Balance, and has performed sideman duties with the likes of Spookey Ruben and (Hershel Savage and) the American Flag. He has produced and recorded the Flag, the Bicycles and Django Haskins as well as much of his own work in his home studio "Flabby Road".

Fans of thoughtful, intelligent pop/rock would do well to keep an eye on Dan Bryk.
