Bio

No Genre: against lame art, that is the way of life as it is led by the members of the aforementioned lineup. The ideological foundations of the group consist of Sašo Ožbolt (vocals) and Bernard Godeša – Berni (guitars, vocals), who have a history of sharing a previous lineup as well. Towards the end of the nineties, they joined up with several friends to perform - mainly rock classics – with Sašo still acting as the drummer. In 2003, the drum sticks were passed on to Siniša Pantar (drums, vocals) and the long haired Sašo took up the role of the frontman. Thus lined up, the group began to create their own music, a style that they dubbed No Genre (mixing all kinds of musical forms). 1st April 2006 saw the addition of the youngest member, Matej Ravšelj on the bass guitar. Since then, the production of authored works grew steadily, now ranging over 20 diverse pieces.

The music and themes vary greatly. They are supplemented by powerful lyrics and a unique performance. The main idea behind the project lies in bringing the art closer to life’s positivism, a positive globalization, necessary to counter the wild and ruinous negative globalization of today, resulting in an ever greater differentiation between classes and peoples.
The said negative globalization can be seen in our very environment, absolutely and on a large scale. The differences grow larger from day to day. It is all obscured by a veil of false humanism that had begun to take advantage of the ignorant people, mindlessly following and unquestioningly accepting the words they’re fed as if they had a duty to, although that is by far not the case.
The band vows to act in an absolutely positive and global sense. This is where the internet comes it – it should be one of the main sources of positive information, declaring what’s going on, what the guys want… every individual, looking to play a part is warmly invited.

About

For a life without borders: “We wish to give something to the people with our art because it all seems so cliché and monotonous to us… Art shouldn’t be a hollow recreation of the perceived but should reflect a worldview instead,” states Sašo, using this philosophy to write song lyrics much like poetry. His main inspiration stems from love as a whole, as a part of the universe, although he could hardly be seen as immune to the political reality of the world. The tense situation in the unstable border region they all live in is felt by the members of the group and other inhabitants: “We, the young people, try to see life differently – we’re looking for a life without borders, for a variety that unites.”

Contra Dekorum fest: The guys stage an annual festival that goes by the name of Contra Dekorum fest. It is an international music and friendship festival in the Croatian town of Prezid. “It’s not a festival with well known groups and a massive crowd, it’s a festival to support good bands from Slovenia and Croatia, playing their own music, who haven’t been given a chance yet,” explains Berni, the festival director. The festival was based upon the idea that Contra Dekorum should have a day each year, when all of the group’s friends and people who share views with them assemble in one place.
Every idea is welcome: Sašo, Berni, Siniša and Matej get along excellently, even though two of them hail from Croatia and the other two from Slovenia. Their music is an interesting mélange of styles that stem from their histories – a voice for positive sociological, ecological and humane / humanitarian ideas without borders.

Kontra kiča in Slovenia and Croatia: During the course of last year, the Contra Dekorum family (band + friends) founded KUD Kontra kiča ( KUD stands for cultural artistic association, and Kontra kiča actually translates into Contra Dekorum). The association was mainly intended to be a legal base for various activities staged by the group (such as musical festivals) or the ones that are yet to be put into action. Soon, a similar idea appeared on the Croatian side of the border and at present, the Croatian Kontra kiča association is already actively involved in the organization of the festival in Prezid and many other projects. “The name Kontra kiča grammatically functions within both languages which obviously brings about some advantages in the field of promotion; the important thing, however, is that it sets an example for the unity of the Slovenian and the Croatian side, which is one of the central aims of the association; that is, to maintain the unity of the border population and make it an even stronger one.”
