“The sixth day of the International Pop Overthrow (IPO) Liverpool Festival 2011 brought about Clockwise’s third consecutive year performing at the Liverpool leg of the festival, which showcases their musical ambitions and must be commended having travelled all the way from Toronto, Ontario, Canada to perform at such a legendary venue as The Cavern Club, having also performed at the IPO Toronto Festival in 2009 and 2010 at The Rivoli. Clockwise hit the stage at 11pm with an energetic set full of almost every genre and sub-genre imaginable. Their set showcased their musical talents in every which way possible and proved one thing; that Clockwise cannot possibly be pigeon-holed into simply one genre or category, as each and every one of their songs cover a multitude of genres. Clockwise were certainly a hit once again for the third successive year as they sold £75 in merchandise and consistently had strong attendance and audience participation throughout their stay in Liverpool.”

“Clockwise’s opening song was Too Much On Your Plate from their debut album, Accidentally On Purpose, which was released in 2000. It is a song that questions and reflects upon just how much work is too much and just how much work is required to earn enough money to live life normally on a day-to-day basis. Too Much On Your Plate was followed up by two songs from their third album Faders On Stun, which received a 2008 release. First up was Water On The Moon, an up-tempo song, which questions the greed from the powers of that be, who would quite gladly export water from the moon back to Earth, only to charge large sums for it, quite reminiscent of oil prices. Second up was If You Don’t Want Love (I Must Be Wrong), which is a love song about an on-off relationship.”

“After the performance, one of the members of the audience and a fellow musician and performer Jeremy Morris described You Really Got Me Going as a “hit song” due to its catchy riffs and lyrics. Rich And Famous was up next – A riff-laden, anthem that would be just as big as Nickelback’s Rock Star if it was to be released under a major record label. The song is from their debut album Accidentally On Purpose (2000) and is about one man’s quest to be…Rich and famous! While also covering the pit-falls of fame and how quick it can fade. A big change coming at the end of each live performance of the song, as Clockwise’s vocalist Claude Kent changes the lyrics up from “Someday, we’re all gonna be fabulously rich and famous” to “Someday, we’re all gonna be fabulously rich and famous! “Back in 2000, the Canadian power pop band, Clockwise brought us Accidentally On Purpose. Thematically, the album feels like a man moving forward with his life after taking his share of lumps through a series of trials and errors. The first track, "Lift A Finger" sings this idea loud and clear. As early as the second track, Clockwise does a wonderful job of zeroing in on all the instruments and focussing on the sounds they make. Not everybody gets a solo but every sound in every song is just as important as the other. The fifth track, "Dramatic" starts out slow with a single acoustic guitar. It's a mood that lives up to the song's title and, as dramatic as it may be, is one of the biggest reasons for owning this CD. “Faders On Stun (2008) is Clockwise's third album and it's like a road map to the town you grew up in. The harmonies are the same and the vocals sound similar but there's something different... something has changed. It's called growth and progress. And with that warm feeling of nostalgia we get from this enjoyable visit, we also find some wonderful surprises. The third track, Surrender, is a refreshing song. It's borrowing of a Cheap Trick classic is part of that nostalgia and is the first happy surprise in an album full of happy surprises. “Too Little, Too Late (2007) is Clockwise's second album and definitely one that shows a real evolution from their first album Accidentally On Purpose (2000). I only wish there had been something within that seven year void to fill in the gap. It's interesting what happens when you hit play. Too Little, Too Late kicks off with “See You Smile,” a song that starts with grungy guitar, sways into a “1963 Beatlesesque” vibe, and then shows us what it means to be modern power-pop The entire album follows that flow, and the intro to each song echoes one or two songs before it. It's the thing that familiarizes you with Too Little, Too Late and reminds you that this is a reunion and a chance to celebrate what the band brings to the table.”

“Latest offering from Canadian pop rockers Clockwise Faders on Stun Opens with Opposite Attack, like a Blur/Oasis 90s feel with the vocals and nice guitar solo. A lot of English sounds to the song, simple and dual vocals throughout. This sets the tone with punk, rock styles with the pop overlay. The band travelling to Liverpool has definitely had an impact on Claude's songwriting, who is also the lead vocalist. “Huh. That was interesting. When a reviewer receives material from an unsigned band, it's a good idea not to let expectations rise too high. There's usually a reason that the band is unsigned, and it has little to do with not yet being discovered. That's why I approached an album by a Toronto group calling itself Clockwise with a bit of trepidation. I wasn't anticipating much. But this one surprised me, so much so that I can say, "Where have these guys been?" The album is tightly played, beautifully produced, and has some cracking songs on it. As a matter of fact, the whole album is consistently nice. That's not to say it's for all tastes, but you'll find that it's for most. The best comparison I can give is : Imagine a Canadian Teenage Fanclub, only, y'know, not so wimpy.”

“Taking the sort of classic rock tropes that have been trotted out by various and sundry in recent years (Kings Of Leon, I'm looking at you), Clockwise has an honest, gritty sound that has been polished to a sheen. Opener "Opposites Attract" sets the tone for the rest of the record : lovingly harmonized vocals, liquid guitar, and a rhythm section that paces it all wonderfully. Mind you, there's not a ton of variety here; when I say the opener sets the tone, that's exactly what I mean. Guitar, bass, drums, and melodious vocals dominate each song, to the exclusion of anything else. You won't hear a keyboard here, or even very much additional percussion. But none of that matters, because the limited palette is applied to songs that use it to its fullest. There's not a bad tune here.”

“That said, allow me to point out some highlights : "Surrender" starts with electrified acoustic guitar, and quickly gives way to wah-wah and a pounding rhythm. This song even quotes a song with the same title by Cheap Trick, with which there are some stylistic similarities. "Boomtown" is a rock 'n' roll paean to modern living : "Say hello to your neighbors who live three feet away". Again, the vocals, reminiscent of the best of 1980s rock, turn the song to a bit more than rock, and closer to pop. "Upside Down" is the longest track on the album, and it deserves the space. An anthemic tune that's done with a sneer, it's a bit slower and meaner than the other songs. "Water On the Moon" is a bit silly on purpose, but features a driving guitar rhythm. It should be pointed out that there's little innovation here, but that's not important. What Clockwise does, it does very well, and sometimes that's the relevant part of music.”

"Then was our highlight of the night – Clockwise (www.myspace.com/clockwisecanada) took to the Live Lounge stage again for the third and final time.
