Bio
Vocalist Christina Watson's impressive range appeals to music lovers from all backgrounds. She can swing on a jazz standard, interpret a ballad with mature sensitivity, and then belt out the blues and funk with attitude and a unique edge. Classically trained, she also possesses a powerful soprano voice, which is showcased by her role in the Nashville based vocal jazz quartet, 3rd Coast Vocals.
With her 2004 debut CD All About Love, Christina Watson caught the attention of jazz fans all around the globe, garnering reviews in publications such as Sweden’s Orkester Journalen, the world’s oldest jazz magazine. Among the tracks that received airplay, Watson’s original song Half Moon led to a collaboration with producer/songwriter Green Daniel. This latest project, entitled A Flower Truly Blue features a stellar trio headed up by Carmen McRae’s former musical director/pianist Pat Coil. Bassist Craig Nelson, drummer Bob Mater, saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trombonist Oscar Utterstrom all lend their talents on this fresh, Euro-inspired jazz album. Four of the songs on A Flower Truly Blue were co-written by Daniel and Watson, including the title track. The cd is available through cd baby and iTunes.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music in 2001, Watson moved from Boston to Nashville. Since her arrival in Music City, Watson has performed at local jazz hot spots, private and corporate events and concerts in the US, Sweden, France, Belgium and South Korea. During the summer of 2007, Watson performed in Sweden with her Watson Utterstrom Nordic Quintet (WUNQ) and then in China with the Middle Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble. In April of 2008 she did another tour of Sweden and Belgium with WUNQ. She has made appearances on Nashville Public Radio (WPLN FM) and at jazz festivals throughout the south. Christina can also be heard on jingles, Nashville songwriters’ demos and with other bands like New Orleans style funk brass band Halfbrass and Bump City.
Watson teaches (vocal literature, chart writing, theory for vocalists) at the Nashville Jazz Workshop and as vocal instructor at Gene Ford Music in Brentwood, TN. Christina even finds time to direct a women’s a cappella choir called “The Holiday Belles” and coach private vocal students from her home studio.
About
May 2009
Love is in the air... Our good friends Neil and Emily got married in Atlanta last weekend, and Oscar and I had the pleasure of not only attending but also providing some of the music for the glorious event. I had the honor of singing Emily's favorite Patty Griffin song "Heavenly Day" as she came down the aisle. Accompanying me on guitar was the inimitable Greg Barnhill, singer/songwriter extraordinaire. I also sang the Father/Daughter dance, "Emily," which was so appropriate.
I put on a showcase for my vocal students at Edgehill Studio Cafe in April, and it was so much fun. I got them performance experience in a great little venue with some of Nashville's best musicians to back them up. I think everyone had a ball and they're all hooked on performing now. Yay! I'm so proud.
Getting ready for some great gigs this month at F.Scott's, The Rutledge, Sambuca... Please check my list of performances for all the details, and then come out to see me!
Bisous,
Christina
