Candye Kane Blues singer Candye Kane has been called a survivor, a superhero and the toughest girl alive. (All are also titles of her self-penned songs.) They are apt descriptions of the jump blues singer, songwriter and mother of two from East Los Angeles who has earned this moniker the hard way. Nominated for five National Blues Foundation Awards (Best Contemporary Blues Female 2011) winner of ten San Diego Music Awards, starring in a sold out stage play about her life and beating down pancreatic cancer in the last two years, Kane is one tough cookie. She has performed worldwide for presidents and movie stars but her path to success was not always glamorous or easy. Candye became a teenage mother, a pin up cover girl and a punk rock, hillbilly and blues-belting anarchist all by the time she was just 21 years old. Ten CDs, six record labels, millions of international road miles and countless awards later, Miss Kane has proven to be a true survivor as she scrambled her way to the top of the roots music heap, creating a world renowned reputation that has spanned two decades. On stage Kane is a colorful mixture of the traditional and the eclectic, singing blues and gospel as well as rock with a punk attitude all while bedecked in bright colored feathers, sequins and rhinestones. Let's just say Kane's performance is Mississippi by way of Las Vegas with a quick stopover in San Francisco. Candye Kane's most recent release is called Coming Out Swinging.
Two Shows: 7:30pm & 9:30pm Candye Kane believes the universe makes no mistakes. She doesn’t view a stereotypical patriarchal God seated on a velvet throne in flowing white robes granting wishes and deciding who will live or die. Kane believes the universe, or your higher power or whatever you feel comfortable calling it, has already made decisions and already knows what you are capable of, long before you take your first step or have your first all night cry over the rejection of a girl or boy at school. The universe has already strengthened you for the most radical endurance race of all...LIFE. In 1983, Candye was a teenage mom from the poor side of Los Angeles, it was welfare and food stamps by day, hard drug use and nude modeling by night, while at the same time yodeling and moshing alongside groundbreaking punk bands like the Circle Jerks, X and FEAR in Hollywood’s underground music scene. To help pay the bills she appeared on the covers of Hustler and High Society, whilst peddling her cassettes of original hillbilly music to anyone who would listen along the Venice, CA Boardwalk. It didn’t take long before Candye signed a management deal with The Halsey Agency, the first agency to promote American music behind the Iron Curtain, she became close friends with Dave Alvin, Marty Stuart and Dwight Yoakum who wisely encouraged her to always be honest about her colorful past. "Be yourself Candye. It's what you're good at" said Yoakum. Candye Kane has that big, brassy voice that has authority and sass; the kind of thing men like because its seductive and women like because its powerful - BB King to the San Diego Reader If you haven't taken Candye Kane seriously before, now is the time to listen. This is a great album and the best of her career. -Richard Ludmerer/ Blueswax
