Bio

Formed in 2007 after drummer Bill Carbone left Toussaint and the China Band for graduate studies in Ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University, Buru Style has performed both countless late-night instrumental nyabinghi shows and served as the backing group for great singers like Toussaint Liberator, Lady Lee, Ajani, Dion Knibb, Ras Coley and others.

Most of the music is composed by Carbone, who mixes his funk and soul-jazz tastes up with a sizable serving of reggae and dub. Whether performing instrumentally or behind Toussaint Liberator or other singers, the band is always air-tight and committed to a group sound more than individual glory. The songs roll forward seamlessly, the dubs pound and pulsate, the vibes are always high.

About

Buru Style

Buru Style started with the heartbeat. For the first few years of its existence Buru had a rotating crew of musicians sharing a love for thunderously pounding Nyabingi rhythms, the traditional Rastafari beat, and the minimalistic, fractured soundscapes of dub.  Through the exploration of musical greats such as Cedric Brooks, Count Ossie, Jackie Mittoo, Lee "Scratch" Perry, King Tubby, and Scientist,  Buru began its journey into original music, combining these traditional reggae and dub influences with newer funk and soul, creating a unique sound.

In 2007, after storming the local Connecticut party scene, Buru Style branched out, working with various singers in the Reggae community.  Past singers and close friends of the band include Dion Knibb, Ras Coley, Lady Lee, Toussaint Liberator, Ghanaian superstar Shasha Marley, Haiti-by-way-of-Boston firebrand Ajani, Ziggy Marley singer Erica Newell, and many more.

Buru Style has now teamed up with Toussaint Liberator, former member of the regionally touring band Toussaint and the China Band and later a member of internationally-renowned funk/soul group Soulive.  Pretty much everyone loves his giant voice, unfailingly postive energy, and original lyrics and melodies. Combined with Buru Style's mash-up sound of roots and lover's reggae,  heart of dub, and blended with an eclectic collection of soulful originals, the group is crushing venues everywhere.
