    BRIANA COWLISHAW
DEBUT ALBUM LAUNCH - with special guests - When Fiction Comes to Life Paving her own imaginative path in the music world, young vocalist and composer Briana Cowlishaw introduces the release of her very first album with some of New York’s greatest jazz musicians; Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass), Gregory Hutchinson (drums), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet) and Mike Moreno (guitar). Recorded in Brooklyn, New York, late 2010 and co-produced by B. Cowlishaw, A. Goldberg, G. Hutchinson and R. Rogers, the album presents Briana’s hypnotising voice and her unmistakable composing style through a collection of 11 original tunes and 2 jazz standards. Her phrasing and interpretation reflect an array of influences throughout the album, fusing stylistic elements of jazz, latin and pop. Having recently studied with internationally acclaimed musicians Kurt Elling, Gretchen Parlato, Gerald Clayton and Sean Wayland, Briana’s compositions are both advanced and innovative in harmonic and structural approach, however manage to hide these complexities through a sincere and generous kind of expression, that explores the journeys and experiences of every day life. This exploration is precisely what inspired the concept for the album. ‘“Every journey evolves from an idea, a vision, a story waiting to be told. This album is very much a scrapbook of short stories; a collage of tales, imaginary landscapes, real life experiences, contemplation, reflection, the search for change and growth, and the many expressions of doubt, love, loss, longing and hope. Each song is like a page or chapter in the narrative that weaves intermittently in and out of fact and fiction, and sometimes, it pauses for a brief moment, half way in-between...” - Briana. A finalist in the James Morrison 'Generations in Jazz' Vocal Scholarship 2009 and 2010, and a recent recipient of the 2010 ‘Artstart’ grant, awarded by the Australia Council of the Arts, Briana will be releasing this debut album at Sydney’s very own home to jazz and original music, Venue 505. Please come and celebrate this exciting new release with Briana and some special guest musicians, and be a part of what is only the beginning of a very exciting journey! Doors open 7:30pm, $30/20 concession!
